I must confess that the results seem satisfactory to me, very much in line with my general sensations to be just a measure of scales per season. I'll do the same count for the 1995-2004 period.
I just want to say that I am a fan of using these overlapping periods like 95-04 and 00-09. Gives a much better picture than the usual "decades".

How you could get it SO wrong beggars belief.
Give it a rest. WhoScored, while a very good website, is not the be all and end all. Sneijder was clearly more influential in terms of the major trophies this season.

He made more assists than any player in September (6) that month of any player during 2010 but has since dropped to 195th place. This was mainly due to his inability to break through opposition defences; he has had the most shots without finding the back of the net in the top five leagues this season. https://www.goal.com/en/news/2939/c...most-effective-player-of-2010-and-should-win- Just please bro About influence im not even sure how youd quantify that In 2009/10 Ronaldo started 28 matches in la liga and was man of the match in 13 of them In the champions league he started in 5 matches and was man of the match in 4 of them So he was literally man of the match in 51% of the games he featured in In la liga he Was second behind Xavi in chances created from open play Was second behind Messi in dribbles completed per 90 Was 3rd behind higuain/Messi in goals per 90 This will just fly over your head most probably In retrospect sneijder had no case for the ballon dor The 2 spectacular individual performers were Lionel messi and Cristiano Ronaldo Confirmed by advanced data rating sites of that time whoscored Castrol Absolutely nothing points to wesley sneijder being a undisputed top 3 outfield player in any competition be participated in. I'm not sure I've seen any 2009/10 media average ratings for the Champions League, but Sneijder was 2009/10 UEFA Club Midfielder of the Year (based largely/solely on UEFA competition performances I believe, but ok Milito did take the overall prize), and made Goal.com's CL Team of the Season too. as a player in general For me he isnt even better then KDB 2017-2020 and the ballon candidates of 2010 are WAY better then the ones of now and he was never in pole position for a BD Remember this is a transitional era aswell Messi/ronaldo/robben were 22-26 years old in 2010 Peak years of a athlete and they were at that time part of the top 10 most devastating athletes in the history of this sport If you dont believe me puck can even tell you the Maradona esque shit robben was doing to win major finals(Dfb pokal final vs schalke) Search it if you can find it And believe me this was actually representative of who he was as a player at that time(length of the pitch runs and devastating wing play) Some wonder goals against Manchester United and fiorentina in the champions league Next to the 2010 candidates Wesley Sniejder is ordinary World class but ordinary compared to extraordinary players The real Podium is Lionel Messi Cristiano Ronaldo Arjen robben Xavi Hernandez Wayne rooney(who i didn't even touch on) Others like Diego milito,Wesley sneijder, frank lampard,Cesc fabregas and david villa complete the top 10 Without the 5 world cup goals Sniejder isn't more worthy of an inclusion then ronaldinho who would make my top 25 best players in 2010
I appreciate the enthusiasm (even if it's critical), but, I answer you... First, I've to clarify that even if I don't mention it here at longer, I'm reviewing each list doing a preliminary analysis, which begins with a compilation of data and statistics of all kinds. Because of that, I must say that all the statistics you mention I registered and took into account previously without exception. It's not unknown data in this process. Then, I'm very aware that advanced statistics (such as WhoScored or Castrol) are very useful tools, they may require not so well defined memories/impressions and help us to define a sketch, but the more I use them, I should also note that they're not as reliable in terms of precision (as if it were a mathematical calculation) due to non-quantifiable intangible variables that can make huge differences). What I do after this data collection is review subjective contemporary opinions and try to see many key matches that allow me to remember certain episodes (that's the reason why it takes me so long, as you can see, because if it were only to conclude from the statistics this review would have been completed years ago). The subjective factor seems to me to be decisive and no, I don't think that here we can get objectively correct answers. That said, I exemplify 2 points from the video you posted: SUCCESSFUL DRIBBLES I've given myself the work with other cases of comparing the statistics with my own impression and I think it's notorious that here a problem occurs in the measure because the difficulty of the dribbles (either for the execution, for the place or for the moment) is not quantified in any formula (for obvious reasons). There is also an inappropiate application for me about the influence of this factor according to the role of each player (something that I perceive inherent in WhoScored). CHANCES CREATED Here I note that relying on moves immediately prior to a definition one has its limitations to be able to measure game creation, an aspect that encompasses predecessor moves/decisions (this, for example, makes Iniesta in terms of statistics look much less influential than he was in this factor in those years). Then, there is the issue of influence in important matches. From the above, you can understand how I think you cannot deduce it from reducing it to how you do it statistically in your previous posts, not like this is an objective deduction, which leads me to: Just check how he (Sneijder) played against Catania or Sampdoria in Milan or against ChievoVerona, Bari or Udinese as visitor in Serie A. If I'm not mistaken, the sum of all these games for him is 0 goals and 0 assists, which has nothing to do with the offensive influence he had on those games, at least for me as spectator. The comparison doesn't fit because you don't refer to similar methods. It's not the same to establish parameters and quantify them than to make a judgment based on the sensation of what is seen. If what you mean is that you believe that subjetive factor should be eliminated from the analysis, I understand it and it seems to me that it has its own logic, but from my perspective I perceive it as an incomplete process. It's one of 2: either you make it trivial or you didn't understand my last message. You slip that my conclusions are based on ONLY reading "tertiary sources" (with the suspicious quotes) and that's not what I've pointed out you, but it's just one more factor that I take into account in a longer process and that includes exactly what you do, consult advanced statistics (even from the same sources, apparently). About the "tertiary sources", they're not more related to "gossip columns" nor nothing alike. I collect sources that show an interesting support, that beyond agreeing or not with them, they show having made a real follow-up on the players they refer to, show seriouness in their task and/or have a certain reputation. Even, in case you didn't read them, these opinions are also usually supported by advanced statistics that include those from WhoScored and other like OPTA (sometimes extracted from links provided here, in BS). For example, right now I'm reviewing the 2010-11 season and a source I just added to confront is a Team of the Season publication from the Ademir to Zizinho blog, written by @comme in May 2011 (2010-11 Team of the Season), and that's because it provides comments that tell me that there was a follow-up before the subjective choice. Finally, you're also ignoring that it's not only a question of blind source query as if I didn't see any game. I'm 35, enough to have a contemporary visual notion since the late 1990's and to be familiar with almost all the review I do from where Tom left this work (1994); part of this process is to refresh the memory with specific matches of each season or, at least, long summaries or individual compilations. Add to that that I've not only been a light spectator, rather between 2006 and 2014 precisely I participated in some publications (sometimes shared here) making the so-called "power ratings" of players in important tournaments, rankings and selections at the end of the season/year, which are also a self-reference to my own visual memory. All said, obviously it's not that I try to point out that my selections and order MUST be taken as guaranteed or anything like that (it's not science), it's only a personal analysis and perspective, and it's interesting that there are others based in different ways.
I repped your Jimmy Greaves post mate, so I hope that is welcome (it was a deserved rep for sure anyway), but on this I would certainly say that these sources (the scoring systems that arrive at marks out of 10) are also subjective because they choose to allocate points to certain actions to a greater or lesser degree than they might. I think they might over-value dribbles, and for sure if (I don't know to be fair) they are bumping up points just for taking shots on goal (maybe they offset it by rewarding shot accuracy to an extent, and percentage of shots ending in a goal?) then that seems doubtful to me, as although what calculator said on another thread about players 'warming up' (hence taking a few shots that don't go in but potentially help with that might lead to better shooting success later in a game - sometimes this will happen I guess but I wouldn't say it's an absolute necessity to be able to score obviously) has some basis in reality, in general if a player shoots and doesn't score it's not really a positive (and could only be judged so subjectively maybe actually, ironically, although expected goals might be something that factors some kind of value judgement in systematically I guess). Maybe they under-value actual assists in the points, since Sneijder got 6 more than either Messi or C.Ronaldo in the CL latter stages that season didn't he? Ronaldo got a near perfect 10 from Castrol for his 2002 World Cup of course (the Brazilian one) and most people seem to agree that seems a bit on the high side. I still think an individual sport like Darts is one that suits stats best (although it doesn't need any detailed statistical analysis as the only stats that matter are the actual score at the end and who wins I suppose - but that will be reflected in one way or another, or multiple ways probably, in the stats, because all the player is trying to do is throw the dart where he is aiming it, although maybe tactics and maths even can come into it a bit too, so one player might have been a bit smarter in their play rather than simply more accurate on average and/or at the crucial moments such as attempts at doubles). EDIT - Peru FC mentioned some salient points on this I see now too. I would clarify in terms of what I say above that as well as arguably over-emphasising 'dribbles' I think in just tallying them up without subjective perspective (they have to do that with a stats system based on 'objective' data I understand) they aren't necessarily reflecting how impressive or useful each 'dribble' is (although they can deduct points for 'bad touches' etc and maybe that balances things off a bit in some cases).
An excellent illustration of the pseudo professoral echo chambers at work, and the critical mass creation. How the snowballing takes ground. The Overton window.
What is exactly the *big* problem with his 'Castrol Index' rating? He was the only player to feature in his league XI, Champions League XI and World Cup XI (although others as Van Bommel were close as well, who actually enabled the players ahead). "Wesley Sneijder debut for Inter against AC Milan, he controlled the whole game and Milan couldn't do anything about it" [0-4 win] https://theathletic.com/2818052/2021/09/10/what-is-the-most-memorable-debut-you-have-seen/ That Castrol Index - which values the place of the action - had him in the team of the tournament of the World Cup, in which he was joint topscorer, and directly involved in creating 9 goals. Neuer Sergio Ramos Puyol Pique Capdevila Mueller Busquets Van Bommel Sneijder Suarez Villa https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/67/...cup-2010-castrol-index-team-of-the-tournament Also in the other two major competitions he entered he was in the ideal XI per Castrol. His overall rank at league level (across all leagues) was with #90 not too great, but it was twice as high as the next best Serie A midfielder, which should be food for thought. He had also a higher overall rank than the often gold-plated striker Diego Milito (who wasn't among the three best forwards of the league per that measure). Then in the Champions League he was, unsurprisingly, of course also in the ideal XI per Castrol. He had after all more combined goals and assists than any player that campaign - and he was central in the action. That makes him the only player to feature at league, continental and national team level that season/year. By the way, per that Castrol Index fundamentalism, one season later Van der Vaart was a top five or top three player in the world across all levels (cf. Ozil for Werder Bremen etc.) and Van der Sar the best goalkeeper in the ranking. I can already fill in how that will play out in the heads, and where it will gravitate to, such are the forces at work. The anglogerman alliance and latin cabal echo chambers.
Several good comments below that video, I see now. The Ballon d'Or should have been him (as the journalists voted) or Messi. Instead, he ended 4th - but no surprises there. Some things I saw: 26 - Wesley Sneijder completed 26 passes in Chelsea's half, the most by any player tonight. Playmaker.— OptaJean (@OptaJean) March 16, 2010 76 & 15 - Wesley #Sneijder created the most chances (76) and made the most assists (15) in the Turkish Super Lig 2016/17. Dream.— OptaPaolo (@OptaPaolo) June 30, 2017 209 - Wesley #Sneijder created 209 scoring chances at Inter from 2009 to 2013 in Serie A, more than any other teammate. It depends a bit on the criteria. If it is about the best player, then Messi is the primary candidate and frontrunner. If it is about a mixture of various things (but still appreciating ability on the ball) and some intangibles like 'transforming a team', grit, returning strong from an ACL injury (no card or foul given) and 'comebacks', then Sneijder is the primary alternative (Serie A hasn't won a CL since). In the semi final he robbed the ball directly from Messi. I touched on this above but he had more goals + assists in the Champions League than any other player, within a largely defensive side and with defensive tasks (less so in the final, to be honest). This includes decisive contributions in every knock-out round, as several comments below that video mention as well. "What separated Sneijder mainly that season was he was absolutely clutch. Scoring in adversity when his teams needed him, when they were behind at home against Barca, in the two tight games with CSKA, in the late comeback against Dynamo, creating numerous chances in the final and perhaps most impressive scoring two goals against Brazil after holland had been dominated early on." You can also not say he was peripheral. In the league he had behind Maicon the most passes per game of his team, and ranked first in touches. In the Champions League he went one better and was first of his team in passes per game and per 90. You can check this in WhoScored. https://football-italia.net/xavi-slams-sneijder-golden-ball-snub/ https://www.sportbible.com/football...s-that-he-was-robbed-of-a-ballon-dor-20210220 In case he had lost all finals (and 2nd in the league), he is in terms of overall and average performance across all levels still top five I'd say. Xavi his case is stronger than the one of Iniesta for this year. About the only thing Iniesta did that Sneijder didn't, was scoring the winning goal in a world cup final, but that 'only' mattered because Sneijder his through-balls were wasted by his team-mates. Other than that there is no real argument. In all honesty I have to say that when the veteran Seedorf and peak Sneijder played against each other, there were a few games where they can't be separated or the veteran was better. The second game of the 2009-10 season for example (not the above mentioned debut game!), although Sneijder received an early red card for cynically applauding the referee, making the comparison hard and given the head-to-head to the other by default. All of this work is incredible but there is something that does not convince me In 1960 Ferenc Puskás is n°1, but in 1961 he is not even top6. What happened there? Did he really dropped his performance that much? Some time ago I counted his goals and assists in Real Madrid, this is what I have found. In season 1959/60 in 36 games (3240 minutes) he scored 49 goals (5 PK) and 23 assists. That is 1.861 no-pk goals+assists per90m Real Madrid scored 132 goals (3.667 per game) That is a contribution percentage of 52.76% In season 1960/61 in 41 games (3690 minutes) he scored 44 goals (6 PK) and 21 assists. That is 1.439 no-pk goals+assists per90m Real Madrid scored 124 goals (3.024 per game) That is a contribution percentage of 50.00% In season 1961/62 in 40 games (3588 minutes) he scored 40 goals (3 PK) and 14 assists. That is 1.279 no-pk goals+assists per90m Real Madrid scored 102 goals (2.550 per game) That is a contribution percentage of 51.69% I think this is really a constant performance, his G+A ratio decreased but the goal ratio of Real Madrid also decreased, making his contribution percentage constant through the three seasons.
Yes, I remember at the time that I did feel that I'd be going that way (without thinking he was flawless or something, thinking eg of the games vs Inter). But I can see the logic behind an idea to end up with a Xavi (like World Soccer voters did - this is for calendar year of course just like with the Ballon d'Or primarily, supposedly at least) or a Sneijder (and maybe his case for 09/10 as per this thread is even a bit better, although his best contributions would be during 2010 rather than 2009 I suppose; certainly the most significant). If I'm honest I did think gameplay wise Iniesta was better than Sneijder in the World Cup itself (with some end product (and wider involvement in end product) also, including obviously that goal), but for season 09/10 in the Champions League I'd think not, and to be fair again I can understand Sneijder's claims based on end product (that could have even been greater, given chances missed that he created as you said yourself) in terms of the best World Cup players still too. I think there were various claims that looking at things the traditional way (with decisive performances and contribution weighted highly) made a case for him over Messi for the Ballon d'Or (not to say that things would always go that way traditionally if a player was getting loads of goals and assists in general and with some stand-out ones and famous performances during the year as a whole, as journalists had their own free will and weren't meant to always pick the decisive players at the top regarding the biggest competitions, even if they often lent in that direction).
