This match was originally scheduled to be played in England, as had been the case for many years, to play each other on a home and away routine. However, at the 1912 IFAB, a vote of sympathy was accorded the Council of the Irish Association in its troubled times.
Benson replaced West Bromwich Albion FC's Jesse Pennington at left-back on 10 February. Pennington was unavailable because of injury.
Ireland beat England at Belfast on Saturday by two goals to one. This is the first occasion on which Ireland have proved successful in the 31 matches which have been played between the two countries. Ireland lost the services of MacAulay, one of their forwards, after the first half-hour's play, so that their performance was all the more creditable. The English team gave a most disappointing display..

Olsen was described as big, speedy and fearless, Middelboe as a lusty left-back. Middelboe by this stage of his career had played in both full-back and all three half-back positions.

Here are my suggestions for the nominees in this season.

    23 Man Shortlist

    Bache, Joseph ENG Aston Villa
    Brownlie, James SCO Third Lanark
    Buchan, Charles ENG Sunderland
    Crompton, Robert ENG Blackburn Rovers
de Korver, Johannes NED Sparta Rotterdam
    Fleming, Harold ENG Swindon Town
    Gillespie, William IRL Sheffield United
    Gordon, James SCO Rangers
    Hampton, Harry ENG Aston Villa
    Hardy, Samuel ENG Aston Villa
    Hodkinson, Joseph ENG Blackburn Rovers
    Holley, George ENG Sunderland
    Houston, John IRL Everton
    Meredith, William WAL Manchester United
    Middelboe, Nils DEN Kjøbenhavns Boldklub
    Mordue, John ENG Sunderland
Pennington, Jesse ENG West Bromwich Albion
    Reid, William SCO Rangers
    Roberts, Charles ENG Manchester United
    Scarone, Carlos URU CURCC
    Schlosser, Imre HUN Ferencváros
    Simpson, John ENG Blackburn Rovers
    Thomson, Charles SCO Sunderland

I once again selected a player from South America, Carlos Scarone, who scored 4 goals in 5 caps and with his team was runner up in the Uruguay League in 1912. His teammate Piendibene could not score a goal in 4 caps.
We have 3 players from Continental Europe, maybe we could add Anton Olsen from Denmark at the expense of some British players.

    Top 3:

Buchan and Mordue from Sunderland played very well in the Football League, but both of them were capped just once (against Ireland, when England played with a less experienced team), and neither of them were selected by peterhrt in his team of the season. Both of them were among Tom Stevens’s Wisden candidates, so probably this was their best season.

Holley and Thomson (another Wisden candidate) from Sundeland and Hampton and Hardy from Aston Villa could also make the Top 3. Maybe even Middelboe could be nominated.

    Any suggestions?

The Top 3 is not easy to choose. John Leng's Football Handbook, football's annual equivalent of Wisden, considered champions Sunderland to be the best side seen in England since the Preston and Sunderland teams of the early league years. But press reviews of their individual players were mixed.

Buchan, Mordue and Cuggy combined well for England against Ireland. Mordue was then injured for the match between the Football League and Scottish League, and was replaced by Aston Villa's Charlie Wallace. Buchan and Wallace failed to gel on the right, with Buchan getting most of the blame. He was not picked for England again until after the war, and then only five times. Buchan's last appearance in 1924 was his only game against Scotland. And yet he was frequently touted as the best player in the country.

Thomson was appreciated more in England, especially at Sunderland, than in his native Scotland. The Scottish press thought his methods too basic, not least a habit of booting the ball hard upfield at the earliest opportunity. Whenever the more refined half-back trio of Aitken-Raisbeck-Robertson (then McWilliam) were available against England, Thomson could not get a game.

George Holley might be the strongest Sunderland candidate this year. Buchan claimed that Holley's performance in the 5-1 away win at Bradford City was the best he ever saw from an inside-forward.

Sam Hardy, back as England's number one goalkeeper, is another good candidate. His new club Aston Villa won the FA Cup and were runners-up in the league. Clubmate Hampton also did well and might compete with Thomson for the third spot. The pair came to blows in the FA Cup Final and were both suspended for a month.

    Thanks for these insights.
Maybe the Top 3 could be Holley, Hardy and Hampton, in this order.
