So pray tell, how did seattle get ranked number 11 and ucsd # 17, when UCSD just beat seattle 2:1 up in the pacific northwest...

I guess the rating commitee did not check the scores LOL

That's ok, Indianapolis lost to Bellarmine but jumped into the rankings and is ahead of Bellarmine in the regional rankings as well!

Looking at those 9/5 rankings, there are a number of real oddities...
    http://www.nscaa.com/seniorRes.php?it=130

Tampa jumped from 9 to 3 on the basis of defeating 3 complete bottom-feeders.

Quincy won 5 games against non-entities, 1 of those an NAIA team

West Florida went from unranked to 16th on the basis of a loss & 2 ties!

And there are several others just as odd.

Maybe its early season fumbles by the voters, but they really did a poor job this time around. There is little reason to these rankings. Reduces the credibility of the process.

But should be an interesting season. I think the Northern Conference (can't recall the name) should get a lot of Kudos with Seattle, Seattle Pacific and now Western Washington doing very well against CCAA competition.

Yes, just like those small national team coaches that vote for the Women's PotY. Although I do admit that I think that some of it is actual bias against teams like UCSD - it seems to me that those coaches are just waiting for the slightest excuse to lower the Tritons ranking. I think that it rankles some of the long-time Div II coaches that McManus & the Tritons came up from the Div III level and took the championship the first two years.

I'm obviously biased in this regard, but it seems that the voters try to promote their own agenda, rather than being impartial judges. Too Bad.

I pretty new to this process, and felt there was some bias against western teams in general. You seem to have a pretty good angle on this: So this question, Do the ratings have an effect on who plays in the NCAA playoffs?

It seemed like last year Chico's being higher rated than Stanislaus is what got them into the NCAA, rather than the regular season where Stanislaus won the CCAA North?

    Thanks for your help.

No. The NSCAA poll has no bearing whatsoever on NCAA regional matchups. The NCAA committees use a separate criteria to determine who gets in and who is seeded where.

This is actually consistent across the board for all DII sports. Any national poll that is voted on is purely for "entertainment purposes" and has no bearing on NCAA Championships selections or pairings.

    And BTW, Tampa is legit.

Indy has a 2-1 loss, a 4-0 win and a 2-1 loss in their last three games, the win coming over a poor Lewis team and the losses to Bellarmine and UW-Parkside.

    Re: NSCAA 9/12 rankings

St. Edwards beats Tampa at home and moves up just one spot.

BTW, Catawba goes down at home to AASU, 1-0, last night. Southeast region is in a little bit of flux, perennial contenders Clayton State, Lincoln Memorial et al are about to be passed up by the new guard of Columbus State, Armstrong Atlantic State and others.

These rankings appear to be pretty random...just to toot my horn. UCSD starts at #10, then wins all of its games and drops first to number 17, and then recovers to # 12. Along the way they beat the then # 10 Seattle team in Washington...

Admitedly, all of their wins have been by relatively small margins, 1 or 2 goals, and they have not had any blow outs like they did last year, but it seems wierd to me that you can win all of your games and drop like that in the rankings.

Seattle pacific has lost to Cal State LA Not ranked at all despite some pretty strong showings), and dropped from 2nd to 5th, tampa lost and is still ranked at number seven.

A question for ecb, how good is belmont abbey? A couple of girls I know went there and it seems like their program is improving. Any thoughts

I guess it's all good as none of this really matters and makes for some good discussions.

Belmont Abbey is IMO best program in a weak conference. They're in a league that features a lot of small enrollment (regularly <1000) private schools and so they do pretty well, but have a hard time getting region consideration because of the two other conferences. I'll have a chance to see them play in late October in person.

Have most of the conferences gone to playing the each team in the confernece home and away? I've looked at a couple of conference schedules and saw this. I guess this would be more for reducing travel.

A post season question. Don't the majority of the spots go to conference winners? How many go to at large teams?

I do know the GLVC does not play home and away. The post season is decided by regional rankings, not by conference championships. Rumor has it that next year it will go up to six teams per region.

With a limited amount of dates available to coaches for scheduling, any conference that has a decent amount of teams (more than, say, 7 or 8) can't afford to tie up 14 or 16 matches in league, because one of the postseason criteria is how you do inside your region but outside your conference.

Next year the NCAA will expand from 4 to 6 but it will also institute the automatic bid. Each conference gets to decide how they want this automatic bid awarded (regular season champion vs. tournament champion) meaning three automatic bids vs. three at-large bids. Right now it's four at-large bids total.

The CCAA has had home and away for their divisions at least since 2001. Some years UCSD would end up playing either Pomona or Dominguez Hills 4 times - twice in division play, once in the conference playoffs, and again in the NCAA playoffs because of the pod format.

I'm surprised that UCSD actually went up 1 in the rankings when they had lost a game to Chico State, who still in unranked.

    Albin-Jones Ratings Out!

    The Albyn-Jones ratings have finally come out. I've listed the top 25;

    1728 Metro
    1593 UNO
    1531 UCSD
    1528 UC Davis
    1519 GVS
    1481 SPU
    1452 St Rose
    1447 W Chester
    1403 C-N
    1366 W Tex A&M
    1354 Quincy
    1353 FPU
    1352 Tampa
    1345 Seattle
    1342 Chico St
    1339 Montana St
    1336 CSU LA
    1321 Ashland
    1321 NKU
    1317 Cen Okla
    1303 Merrimack
    1297 Mercyhurst
    1290 W Fla
    1270 Tusculum
    1265 Washburn

    http://www.soccerratings.com/W06D2.html

A-J hasn't updated it's conference ratings yet, with the last ones being from 12 December. I do not believe that much has changed from then, when the CCAA, NE10, and GNW were the top 3. The CCAA has 7 teams in the top 40.

    Results thru 9/24

There probably won’t be much movement in the rankings, as only 1 of the top 15 teams had a loss (Slippery Rock) and only 4 others had ties.

There was also only 1 loss among the teams in the 16-25 rankings, that being Montana State.

None of the top 25 played each other – but Carson-Newman will be facing Tusculum and Indiana, PA will take on Slippery Rock (who might not be ranked by then) on the 27th.
