I thought that I’d start a thread for the top Division II teams, some of them perennials, and some of them upstarts that after another week or two won’t be regarded so highly. And why not include the NSCAA poll and (when it appears) the Albyn-Jones ratings! First off, here are 'some of the usual suspects': Metro State Roadrunners Franklin Pierce Ravens Northern Kentucky University Norse Seattle U Redhawks Nebraska, Omaha Mavericks
Here is last weeks rankings: NSCAA 06 Sep 2005 Top 10 Metro State Seattle Univ FPU Tampa Carson-Newman U of South Dakota Seattle Pacific Indiana U of PA Wisconsin Parkside Regis
For reference, here are the final Albyn-Jones ratings from 2004: D2 Soccer Ratings Final Top Teams were: Metro State, 1689 Franklin Pierce, 1611 Seattle Pacific, 1491 Ashland, 1471, Nebraska-Omaha, 1439 UCSD, 1428 Regis, 1424 Truman State, 1413 Adelphi. 1403 Wisconsin-Parkside, 1393 CSU Dominguez Hills, 1386 Seattle, 1384 Assumption, 1349 Carson-Newman, 1346 St Rose, 1341 Merrimack, 1337 West Florida, 1333 Tusculum, 1332 CSU Chico, 1324 Bryant, 1317 Northern Kentucky, 1291 Cal Poly Pomona, 1291 SW Baptist, 1289 LIU - Southhampton, 1286 Grand Valley State, 1277 CSU San Bernardino1275
As an alum, it's nice to see IUP in the top ten. Not sure how long they will stay there. But it's nice to see the program improve a little bit every year. It's too bad we don't have a men's program any more.

Albyn-Jones Ratings Looking at the ratings, this was the first time that there was actually any change at all. Among those in the top 30 for 06 October, the largest losses in ratings points were: -97 TAMU (down from 14th to 30th) -59 CSUDH (from 6th to 10th) -49 Seattle Pacific (still in 2nd overall, though) -33 St Rose (12th to 14th) -31 Ashland (11th to 13th) And those with the largest gains: +84 UCSD (up from 8th to 4th) +82 Carson-Newman (up to 20th from 27th) +80 FPC (still in 3rd overall, though) +70 S Illinois (from 22nd to 16th) +69 GVSU (from 19th to 12th) +43 UNO The highest average rating for opponents among the top 40 goes to CSUDH, with 1220. Others are: 1203, CSU San Bernardino; 1201 Grand Canyon; 1190 - CSULA, Cal Poly Pomona; 1167 - FPC, Assumption, St Rose; 1161 Seattle Pacific; 1137 - UCSD, Seattle U, W. Washington. I'm assuming that the system didn't change the first 3 periods because it was waiting for enough data to work on. Compare that to the NSCAA poll, where there have been very large variations from week to week: Seattle University, ranked 2nd on 06 Sep, then dropped out of the top 25, and hasn't reappeared - yet their losses have been to teams like CSUDH, UCSD, and Seattle Pacific. Ashland, ranked 15th to start, also dropped out and hasn't reappeared. Their losses were to teams with a combined record of 31-7-0 (S. Illinois, N. Kentucky, & Wheeling.) A third example is Wisconsin-Parkside, ranked 9th, then disappeared, not even receiving votes in any week after that. Their losses - at GCSU, at NKU, and at Lewis.
NSCAA Rankings 11 Oct Rankings The Top Ten Metro Seattle Pac W Fla W Chester UNO FPC GVSU Regis UCSD Barton Of note - Barton jumped to 10th from not even receiving votes before. They've won 8 in a row, but none of them were any good. And they lost to Carson-Newman. There must have been some real politics going on... And what happened to cause the voters to drop Assumption completely? They were ranked 4th last week, still haven't lost, and have wins over FPC, New Haven, UMass-Lowell, and Bridgeport, along with a tie against St Rose!

this week's NSCAA Rankings 18 Oct Rankings Top 10 1 Metro 2 Seattle Pac 3 W Fla 4 W Chester 5 FPC 6 UNO 7 NKU 8 Assumption 9 Catawba 10 Tampa Not much change in the top 6, but after that there were a few violent shifts, again indication of a lot of politics going on. Assumption went from getting no votes last week to #8. Last week Barton was in at #10, now they've dropped completely out. NKU moved up 6 places, and Catawba moved up 5. Minnesota-Mankato appears for the first time, at #16. Tusculum jumped up to 15th. Stanislaus appeared for the first time also, on the strength of it's win over UCSD. UCSD dropped 2 places, Regis 4, GVSU 7.
Division II Conference Strengths For some reason the A-J ratings for this week haven't been posted yet, but the conference ratings have (datd 18 Oct). As with every other year since 2000, the CCAA again has the highest median rating, but there is not near the difference between it and the 2nd highest rated conference. Here are are the ratings of some of the stronger conferences from the past few years: 2005 1214-CCAA 1188-NE10 1161-GNAC 1090-NCC 1035-GLVC 961- RMI 2004 - not rated 2003 1273-CCAA 1167-NE10 1106-GNW 1093-RMI 1056-NCC 1043-GLVC 2002 1286-CCAA 1140-GNAC 1116-NE10 1030-GLVC 994-NCC 2001 1308-CCAA 1181-RMI 1093-NE10 1062-GNAC 921-NCC 2000 1296-CCAA 1169-NE10 1149-RMI 1035-GLVC 955-NCC
Looking forward to a possible West Chester vs IUP conference final. That should be an exciting game. Well, for me it will be an exciting match your level of excitment may decrease with your distance from the Keystone state.
This week's A-J ratings The ratings finally showed up yesterday evening (even though they are dated 19 October...) Anyway, here are the top teams: 1746 Metro 1539 FPC 1519 Seattle Pac 1488 UCSD 1452 Regis 1435 UNO 1414 W Fla 1386 NKU 1371 GVSU 1359 Seattle U 1359 UC Davis It must be noted that UC Davis had by far the toughest opponents median rating, at 1400. They have played a number of Div I teams, that is why their won-loss record looks so bad... 1357 Assumption 1351 CSU DH 1350 Ashland 1350 Wis-Parkside 1346 CSU Chico 1341 CSU Stanislaus 1332 Tampa 1324 Bryant 1323 St Rose 1319 Merrimack 1305 S Illinois 1301 Barry 1289 CSU Los Angeles 1273 W Chester 1256 Cen Okla 1256 Lincoln Mem 1237 Carson-N 1236 Adelphi 1231 S Conn 1227 W Texas A&M 1225 Lowell

A-J Opponents Ratings After seeing who was in the top 25 for the NSCAA, I thought that I'd look at what last week's AJ ratings listed for its top 38 teams as far as their opponents median ratings: 1400 – UC Davis 1201 – Seattle Pac 1183 – St Rose 1182 – CSU DH, CSU Chico, CSU LA 1172 – Assumption 1165 – Seattle U 1160 – UCSD, W Wash, Grand Canyon 1156 – CSU Stanislaus 1138 – MA Lowell 1105 – FPC 1094 – Merrimack, S Conn 1072 – Tampa 1069 – Metro, Regis 1047 – Bryant 1045 – A&M Commerce 1039 – W Texas A&M 1030 – S Illinois 1012 – NKU 1001 – Barry 0999 – Parkside 0995 – Ashland 0990 – UNO 0972 – Lincoln Mem 0968 – Cen Okla 0950 – GVSU 0943 – Carson Newman 0942 – Wheeling Jesuit 0932 – New Haven 0918 – Adelphi 0901 – Catawba 0900 – W Chester 0845 – W Fla And what do you see? The team that has had the easiest schedule is that of NSCAA ranked #3 West Florida. The 2nd easiest is that of #4 West Chester! And the 3rd easiest? It's #7 Catawba. The coaches should know that these teams have been playing nothing but cupcakes and should be ranking them lower for that. Strength of schedule certainly means nothing to these guys...
