You make a very good point.

A lot of guys repeat that old saw about how there's no such thing as bad publicity as if it was an immutable law of nature.

But if the publicity is, for example "Joe has genital warts" or "Bob is a thief" then it really is "bad publicity" if you're trying to get laid or hired.

Likewise, there is nothing good about publicity that says you're putting on a dog and pony show in order to hustle investors.
