With MLB's impending Covid crisis looming, what are the thought on non-bubble (or even in-bubble) sports for the rest of the Summer/Fall, particularly as pertains to MLS? The jury is still out on the bubble sports (notwithstanding Lou Williams' visit to a strip club "to pick up wings"), but I don't see how MLS or the NFL will make this work outside a bubble. Had all those Miami Marlins been sweating and breathing on their opponents in a contact sport, the Phillies would definitely be facing a breakout of their own (they may still, even with minimal interaction).

My personal opinion is that player safety overrules any other factor, so I would just as soon see no sports until there's a vaccine (or play in a bubble in Europe where the virus is comparatively under control). Every sport will have an asterisk on this season, anyway, so the value of winning is diminished.

 

Random stat of the day:
No MLS coach has won the double (MLS Cup and Supporters' Shield) with the same team more than once.

Only 5 teams have won the double (DCU x2, KC, LAG x2, CMB, TOR).
Only 5 coaches have won it (Arena x2, Rongen, Gansler, Schmid x2, Ganney)
Both Arena (DCU, LAG) and Schmid (LAG, CMB) did it with different teams.

 

In all seriousness, I'm very concerned about this injury. It was an issue in preseason, he didn't play in the pre-shutdown games, and then there was a layoff of I don't even remember how long because I've lost all sense of time. If those months of nothing didn't heal it, what's two-three weeks going to do? I keep dreading the release of news that he's out for an extended period or needs surgery or something. He is literally irreplaceable. They do not play the same without him, they have no one who comes close to replicating his capabilities, everyone else gets worse/moves out of their comfort zone when he's not on the field, and opponents smell blood and capitalize on his absence.

 

Fair points, but I think that they will need a few games without him to find their rhythm -- he's definitely the center of the offense, so it's certainly a blow, but there's too much talent (especially compared with past teams) for me to think the scoring malaise will continue. So I'm not sure if anybody would be interested in knowing this, but I've taken advantage of this downtime and compiled what would best be described as an anthology book about the entirety of the Revs existence. It starts with the awarding of the 1994 World Cup to the USA and proceeds up to present day. It is currently about 250,000 words long. I'm just re-reading and editing it now, and I am really not sure what if anything I am going to do with it. But I can't begin to describe how rewarding an experience it has been as a Revs fan getting to rediscover everything about this team from before it had a name up to now (even all the parts that piss me off) as well as being highly therapeutic in a very stressful time.

 

Totally agree that if any Revs team is able to figure out how to be successful in this situation, it will be this one. Gil has just been so good, and the difference in their play at MLS is Back when he was on field vs. off field was stark.

On the bright side (if there is a bright side), the surgery was a cleaning operation, so the recovery should put him back to 100% without lingering problems.

In January of 2013, the Revs held the #4 pick in the SuperDraft. They traded up with Toronto to get the #1 pick, which they used on Andrew Farrell. The #4 pick (which TOR subsequently traded to VAN) was used on: Kekutah Manneh.

 

Maybe they did, and they decided it wasn't a good match.
