I may be using wrong terminology (I never had one) or simply remembering wrongly. I do remember you could purchase them from the local FM station, so it may have had a limited range and/or other restrictions - I was an 8-track man, myself. Yea, the first time I heard FM, I was amazed how clear it was. Donald Fagan approves this reference.
Yeah, this is definitely before my time. I don't recall that at all. My first clock radio was AM/FM. I did own a couple of AM transistor radios before that, tho. My folks had one, but by the time I was old enough for my own stereo stuff, cassettes were the thing. Honestly, I still don't think the cassette has been equaled for ease of recording, use, transport, and just overall convenience. So much easier to put together playlists than scrolling thru a phone and whatnot.
I've somehow landed on using a turntable with USB slots for ripping songs from vinyl to .mp3 format. Having a single thumb drive, already split up into sections/playlists that I can put on other devices with ease, is the closest I've found to matching the convenience of cassettes.
...and while I'm here... These guys are going to be in town later this month. Kraftwerk - "The Robots"
I already put this in one of the other threads recently, but here we go with the great-granddaughter of Waylon Jennings. Brianna Harness - LONELY
Alone Again, Naturally - Vulfmon (feat. Monica Martin) I just love how smooth and easy sounding this is.
Old Crow Medicine Show - "Pray For America" OCMS is coming to town in a couple of months so I was checking out some of their music. Had not heard this one before.
"Uptown Funk" Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell hosted an event last night that (tried to) cover the more than 60 year history of his dad, Willie Mitchell, and the iconic Royal Studios - Established in 1956, it is one of the oldest continuously operated music recording studios in the world. He talked about this song (they finished the show with it). He particularly mentioned the line, "Wait a minute. Fill my cup put some liquor in it": Sometime in the middle of the night, (long story-short) Boo had found a bottle of rum and was walking up with it and Bruno said this line - and apparently the mic picked it up. They liked it, so left it in. Among others who have recorded/been produced/etc. (I just copied this out of wikipedia....it was easier.) Al Green, Chuck Berry, John Mayer, Buddy Guy, My Morning Jacket, Robert Cray, De La Soul, Otis Rush, Keith Richards, Solomon Burke, The Bo-Keys, Bobby Blue Bland, Ann Peebles, Ike & Tina Turner, Tom Jones, Anthony Hamilton, Rod Stewart, Paul Rodgers, Cody Chesnutt, Sam Moore as well as the Barnyard and Soul Men soundtracks.
Aww, he's always had that country blues stuff floating around the edges of his ambitions-- "I went home and listened to Jimmy Rodgers on my lunch break." He's just finally getting a chance to do more of it.
I had no idea. Thanks, again, for a bit more music ed. EDIT: She's in town tomorrow night. If I get a chance, I'll ask her about it...... EDIT II: Hey! It could happen!
"Ex-Mørtis" - Ice Nine Kills (a bit NSFW) Never heard of these guys; in fact, this is the only song I've listened to. However, they are in town this month and my son wants to go and asked me if I'd go. I said sure. Hmmmmmmm.......
"Respect Yourself" - Mavis Staples (Song starts around the 2:15 mark) Mavis Staples was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall Of Fame last week. Unfortunately, she wasn't there to receive her award or perform. Instead, four locals sang this song; I guess I'd forgotten how good it is.
