What to pick--the classics or the new stuff--or those undiscovered gems in the rough... :p

I fess--pick anything from Toad the Wet Sprocket, the Goo Goo Dolls, Nickelback, or Chris Daughtery.

So as long as it isn't Justin Timberflame it's good! :D

I know the two songs "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" don't really count in the Beatles catalogue but really if it did, I'd pick this one.

For good measure I'll throw in the other--the song is more slower but it's visually appealing...

OK I'll add this but only because of the Liverpool connection--it's just too bad John, Paul, George, and Ringo never did this song in their heyday. Also, Sir Paul is a big fan of Everton from what I heard.

I only get to pick one?! That's ridiculous!

Well, I have to pick this one. It's even appropriate to being a Quakes fan these days. Listen carefully to the very first line. Fun footnote, I was at this concert. Yeah, those were the days. (When Goodsport was only two, I think!)

And maybe a couple of dozen other ELP tunes. Greatest live band ever. I mean just wow.

And the Flower Kings! "There is More to This World" or "Silent Sorrow" or "Stardust We Are."

And French band Halloween. Very obscure, but really great, in a very quirky French sort of way.

And Le Orme, "Lungo Il Fiume." A brilliant Italian, band. The one time I saw them I had never heard any of their music before and was a total convert within the first ten minutes. Also true of Halloween. :D

Oh, and Renaissance's "Ashes Are Burning," the live version of course.

And I haven't even started on King Crimson.

And I'm leaving off Shostakovitch's Symphony No 10, Copland's Symphony No 3, and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition!

Favorite song is just too little. Sorry.

GO QUAKES! :D

Oh and Mike Oldfield. I've seen him in concert twice. The first time he and his band played most of the "Five Miles Out" album, and extended version of the first side of "Ommadawn" that completely stunned the audience, and "Tubular Bells." Mind numbingly hot show. Just amazing. :D

And UK at the Oakland Coliseum in November of 1979. They opened for Jethro Tull and stole the show. Eddie Jobson, John Wetton (sober), and Terry Bozio. Awesome stuff. :D

And the Jan Garbarek Group at the Kuumbwa jazz center in Santa Cruz in fall of '86. (Garbarek, Eberhard Weber, Nana Vasconcelos, and Lars? Johnsson) They were so hot, we stayed for the second set.

And I've seen Pat Metheny turn in some excellent shows. And the Moody Blues. And Joe Walsh, before he joined the Eagles.

I could go on, but favorite song?! That's like expecting someone to take just one sip of a beer and not have any more. It's like expecting me to kiss my wife only once. Not going to happen.

GOOOOO QUAAAAAKES!!!!! :D

I've seen Pink Floyd too. The show they did at the Oakland Coliseum on the "Division Bell" tour where they opened with "Astonomy Domine." Great show, but not as great as most ELP shows. :D

Go Quakes! :D

"Thieves in the Night" by Blackstar

I saw someone post this as their favorite California song in a facebook group and thought you guys might be interested in it. I've never heard it, but the title screams San Jose. The song is "Earthquakes and Sharks" by Brandston.

I've listened to so much music that it is difficult to pick a genre that is my favorite, let alone an actual song. However this from a band I'm currently "feeling".

I agree with Mark, but there are a couple of songs that have stood the test of time and musical trends for me. Here they are in no particular order. I suppose you can look at it like a mix cd.

Ours - "Medication"
Deadsy - "Winners"
Glassjaw - "Siberian Kiss"
Deftones - "Digital Bath"
30 Seconds to Mars - "Capricorn"
Far-Less - "Too Pretty To Be A Zombie"
In Reverent Fear - "Heavy On It"
Far - "Water And Solutions"
Weezer - "Say It Ain't So"
Zeromancer - "Cupola"
Seigmen - "Hjernen Er Alene"
Rammstein - "Klavier"
Johnny Truant - "The Bloodening"
Pantera - "I'm Broken"
As I Lay Dying - "Distance Is Darkness"
The Black Dahlia Murder - "Closed Casket Requiem"
Unholy - "Variola"
Norma Jean - "Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste"

Yep, that's most of it...oh, and these two:

I couldn't help it...

it's comedy gold. Especially when the band goes into the breakdown at about 1:59 and during one of Lars' fills at about 2:24.

Here's one of Eric Clapton for good measure...

Favorite - "Witch Hunt" by Rush.

Well, I'm a huge fan of Rush. If I have to pick my 20 favorite songs more then half would be from Rush songs. My absolute favorite song is not well known, but I think one that defines what is wrong with this world (especially with people from the Middle East). It is called "Witch Hunt" I like it for the lyrics which I'll post below.

The last two paragraph in particular have great meaning to me.

"That those who know what's best for us"
"Must rise and save us from ourselves"
"Quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand..."
"Ignorance and prejudice And fear walk hand in hand..."

--------------

"Witch Hunt"

The night is black
Without a moon
The air is thick and still
The vigilantes gather on
The lonely torch lit hill

Features distorted in the flickering light
The faces are twisted and grotesque
Silent and stern in the sweltering night
The mob moves like demons possessed
Quiet in conscience, calm in their right
Confident their ways are best

The righteous rise
With burning eyes
Of hatred and ill-will
Madmen fed on fear and lies
To beat and burn and kill

They say there are strangers who threaten us
In our immigrants and infidels
They say there is strangeness too dangerous
In our theaters and bookstore shelves
That those who know what's best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves

Quick to judge
Quick to anger
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand...

if you haven't already, do a search in you tube for "Neil Peart: Anatomy of a Drum Solo"... it looks like You Tube is getting better at removing illegal stuff but they used to be all over.
