Diego Lugano is from Uruguay and he is a starter for his NT.
He plays for São Paulo (brazilian club) and is the best defender on the brazilian league.
I believe he will go to Europe next year.

    that's him

on current or recent form, based around what ive seen, not rumour (so mainly premiership players, then.......). because i dont get to see much non-english football at the minute, im judging players in other leagues on their form over the past couple of seasons, and premiership players on current form.

    .....................................................Buffon

    cafu?............................terry...........................nesta...................del horno

    hleb............................ essien......................murphy (no sh!t)...........duff
    ..................................................rooney
    ...............................................shevchenko

buffon - best in the world.

    terry and nesta - flawless.
not sure about cafu really, he can be a liability, perhaps someone could suggest a reliable world-class right back? gary neville is injured.
cole is injured, and del horno has impressed me. if there has been a full back in outstanding form in france, or spain, tell me.

essien has been awesome since joining chelsea, heading for a POTY award i reckon.
danny murphy has been the second best midfielder in england so far and deserves his place in my team. both are attack minded but essien is excellent defensively.
duff has been very disciplined and steady this season, and is an enormous talent - i wish mourinho would unleash him sometimes. he'd rip defences apart from the left and create countless chances.
hleb is awesome! he has fantastic vision and technique. he and essien have impressed me most so far this season.

rooney - everyone has said he'll fall on his arse, including me. instead, he is developing into one of the world's elite players without breaking a sweat. he still gets better with every single game. he will be better than zidane in 5 years time. <----- i said it here.
sheva - errrrrrrr is anyone going to argue? well, theres henry......but he's been injured for a few weeks.

weaknesses: lack of a true holding midfielder? maybe. lack of current knowledge of other leagues? definitely. danny murphy? at the moment, no. but tell me where i'm going wrong/ what others i should have included etc.

Agreed. Duff is as good as any player offensively when he's allowed attack but Mourinho just keeps him on that leash. He gave him freedom against Anderlecht and he was top class in the first half.

Aside from the defensive midfielder point you had raised and the inclusion of Murphy, people can't really complain about it. There are better players that could be picked, but it is solid enough. I have a concern with Hleb at right-wing, but Cafu's runs up the flank should cover that weakness.

Names like Zambrotta, Lampard, etc will no doubt be mentioned by others.

    He already is.

murphy has played out of his skin so far this year - his passing and movement has been pretty much better than anyone else in the premiership bar essien and hleb. i would include him ahead of lampard on current form. however, like i said - someone in france, germany etc will have been playing even better, but i dont get to see them. suggestions?

del horno and cafu were the ones i was most unsure about. so which full backs across europe or SA have been in outstanding form so far? (zambrotta seems to be mentioned a lot).
