It's time — the season starts tomorrow with Fort Lauderdale vs. Revs II! Here's who I have on pro deals. I also have 30+ guys who have been announced as academy signings who I won't list here as it's tough to know who really has a chance to play and which academy kids are there as a PR exercise and/or just a nice experience for the player. Clarification/corrections on players' positions are welcomed. I saw a group of people walking by my apartment in Somerville with Revs gear yesterday afternoon. It was such an usual sight, that I wondered where they could be going. 5 of 'em. I thought they might be going to this Revs II game, but that was on the road. Anyway, they did get Dewhurst into the game as well Congrats to @NERevsAcademy players Noel Buck '05, Dennis Ramirez '01 and Cole Dewhurst '03 on your professional debuts tonight with @NERevolution2. Terrific 3 points on the road! #NERevsII #FTLvNE https://t.co/ei8tGXD9SW— Bryan Scales (@BryanScales3) April 11, 2021 By the way, is Blaine Ferri not actually on Fort Lauderdale? Not in the 18. I know he's a couple months too old for this thread now. It just seems I've lost track of him.
I saw a family decked out in Revs gear in the Arboretum last week. I wouldn't say it's crazy unusual to see Revs gear, but it's definitely very far from saturated... Anyway, Ferri left the Miami org after last season and hasn't popped up anywhere else yet.
NISA kicks off today. Most of the league could be a lot better in communicating players signings and details about their players so this list may not be the most accurate or complete. Preseason is worth just a provisional hat tip. We'll deliver the full one when he gives us a detailed write-up of a player's 8-minute substitute appearance on a hot night in July.
Last I heard Ferri was getting some trials but had not latched on anywhere yet. Maybe he shows up on a roster soon somewhere overseas. Speaking of former U17 WC starters, has Andrew Carlton found a home for this season?
You must hold the rest of us in very low regard to think we wouldn't be blowing up the Carleton thread if he had signed somewhere.
Fort Lauderdale is such a funny team and not in a good way. They dominated possession and took 20 shots, and the only one on target was a hopeful long ball from Acosta. These reserve teams play aspirational styles to prepare their kids for MLS but the more pragmatic League One sides just crush them.
First game of the season NE II vs. Miami II: On the Miami side of things, their best prospect is Edison Azcona ('03). He had a pretty good game. Just a very crafty winger, comes inside really well, can dribble a little, pass, shoot. Really good soccer IQ. I still believe he's a #10. He plays mostly LW, but when he switches to RW he has almost no chance because he cannot beat a player to the outside, and doesn't have much of a left-foot. I'm still not sure why he's a winger. His game fits the #10 position. Noah Allen ('04) looks improved this season. LB with good energy. Not a really talented player in any regard, but he does a lot at an average level. He really pushed the pace in this game, and made a lot of good plays on both sides of the ball. Miami has two brothers, Ethan Hardin ('03) and Drew Hardin ('04). I've watched a lot of Ethan, and do not rate his game. He's a very generic CB. He'll probably have a pro career. He's a top 100 or so '03, but not a player whose game has much upside IMO. I have not seen his brother Drew play until this game, but I'm afraid it's a similar type of skillset. The difference is that Drew plays as a box to box CM. Very generic CM. He probably is about a similar level player to Ethan, but I've not seen enough of him to say with much degree of certainty. Noel Buck ('05) looks like he's experienced a big growth spurt in the last half year, which is not completely surprising, considering he's 16 years old. I previously thought he was a fringe #8/10 prospect with a good left foot. Now, he's average or better height with a good left foot. He's a good prospect. I don't find his game terribly exciting. His game is really just about being above-average with his passing through midfield, and hopefully average everywhere else, but there's a much better chance at 5'11 (and he could still grow taller) that he can stand up to the physical/athletic/defensive rigors of being a #8 than he could at 5'5/5'6. He played about an average game, but he was the youngest player on the field. Not a bad performance, at all. Hikaro Fujiwara ('03) had a pretty quiet game, but he did assist the winning goal. He's usually a lot more energetic and involved with pushing the pace of the game, but he saw very little of the ball in midfield. He's a #8 who plays very fast, left footed kid with decent technical ability and soccer IQ. He's not a bad athlete, but I wouldn't consider it a strength. I like his game, but I also am not sure where he fits in at the club with a better prospect (Buck) playing the same position, and being a better prospect. Morris Matthews ('03) and Cole Dewhurst ('03) both had sub appearances off the bench. Almost no impact for either. Matthews came in at CM, Dewhurst at CB.
Fujiwara apparently moved to the US five years ago, so it’s not clear what his citizenship timeline would be. I know that dual nationality is a tricky thing under Japanese law, but I’m not an expert here.

Snip: REDWOOD CITY, CA — Professional soccer is coming to Redwood City. Bay Cities F.C. plans to begin playing in the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) in 2022 after submitting an application on Thursday. NISA is a league in the third tier of the American soccer pyramid. https://patch.com/california/redwoodcity-woodside/redwood-city-get-professional-soccer-club

Jonathan Gomez started for Louisville in preseason in a 2-0 win. Hopefully it stays this way in the regular season. 46' | We're back underway with the same crew. Let's finish this one off boys! pic.twitter.com/VtOv7bB2yy— Louisville City FC (@loucityfc) April 17, 2021 Jordan Adebayo-Smith scored for the Rowdies. If he plays regularly in USL that certainly beats being in the fifth tier of England. 74' Adebayo-Smith streaks down the right wing, past a defender and flicks it over the keeper and then buries the ball. It was pretty. 4-0— Rowdies Gameday (@RowdiesGameday) April 17, 2021
New England II: Colby Quinones ('03) started at RB, and was about average. He had a sloppy game on both sides of the ball, but also some good moments. Damian Rivera ('02) wasn't bad, but I just don't see much ability there. He could amount to a passable MLS'er. Hikaro Fujiwara ('03) had a good cameo off the bench. I think he adds more as a bench player. He doesn't have the fitness to play that style of play for 90 minutes (very few do). Noel Buck got a late appearance. Didn't have any time to make an impact. Miami II: Noah Allen ('04) at LB had a crazy game. He made many great plays, and many terrible plays. It's almost hard to believe someone could have such an erratic game. You'd think that mentally it'd be hard to do that, but he was able to. He's clearly not ready to play in MLS, but I do think he's a talented player (the most talented that played in this game), and he will eventually get an MLS contract. He needs to work on his 1v1 defending. His quickness isn't bad, but he doesn't push back enough when players try to go by him. He needs to play more physically, and he gets caught flat-footed too often. I also think he may be an above-average passer. I initially thought he was one of those players without any real strengths or weaknesses, but his passing might be a strength, although if it is, it's nothing spectacular. Tormenta: Brittain Gottlieb ('03) made his pro debut for Tormenta against Miami's reserves. He only played a few minutes coming on at RB. I couldn't get enough of an assessment on his game, but he was very good in the air, and looked like a good athlete.
