Finlay and Boyd are slashers. Get into the box to get onto the ends of things. Each makes good off the ball runs. Boyd looks to have the better cross. Finlay likes the cutback. Neither is any type of creative fulcrum of an outside mid. Neither has been able to sustain a high level of seasonal productivity in his career.
Maybe I'm blind here, but it ws interesting to see that he has actually played almost twice as many games as a left wing as a right wing, didn't he play on the right for us? That's my memory, but maybe it's faulty. I see 10 appearances in 2019, 6 as a starter and 4 as a sub. He got the 2 goals, my memory is that he blew one glaring sitter, but I could be wrong. I think the main reason he was kind of in the dog house with us is that he looked worse over time, and then had a year with Beskitas that was definitely one to forget. Nice to see he's bouncing back, however, honestly, there are at least 4, probably 5 wingers ahead of him at this point: 1.Pulisic 2.Reyna 3. Weah 4. Aaronson 5. Morris (IR) then we've got more guys bubbling up like KDLF, Uly Llanez, Caden Clark, Cade Cowell, even guys like Niko could be used as a winger and there's Arriola as a defensive stopper, and offensive accidental stopper specialist. I just don't know where he fits though I appreciate the depth. Definitely could've used it four years ago, but now, not sure how he pushes his way into relevance unless injury issues get unbelievably bad. That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if he's fifth or sixth on the overall winger depth chart with Morris out. He shouldn't be higher than that though.
None of the wingers for the US has actually been pulling up trees for club or country. Well, Morris had been. But he's out of the picture. It'd be great to some consistent performances. Club affiliations don't win games, especially on the road in Central America.
That's a fair assessment. I started my "don't sleep on Tyler" when he was completely off the radar. It's good to have depth. And, maybe the uppin comers make him obsolete. But, 5 goals in 5 matches definitely sparks curiosity. I couldn't find any clips of these recent goals. Here's a highlight video of his 2019 season. (that missed sitter won't be in there.) if a player is better than a national team player but isnt called into the national team, does he exist as a national team player?
The winger pool looks like Weah, Pulisic, Aaronson, Reyna, Mueller, Boyd, Niko, Ebobisse, Konrad, Cowell. Half can get NL. The other half can get the GC.
Total missed the point. The poster I quoted from claimed CCV was better this year than last because his team is currently higher than last year. The poster hasn’t seem him play nor could tell you anything about the player that wasn’t found on a Twitter feed or a podcast.
they did in u20 World Cup qualifying. I’m not worried about anything other than injuries and Berhalter. And honestly, the funniest part of this is that generally the most experienced sides are the ones that generally got humiliated the most in hex qualifying (summer of ‘01, ‘17 hex cycle) and the less experienced sides that did better ‘97 hex, ‘09 hex, ‘13 hex). ‘05 was the one experienced side that did well.
I know what you’re saying. What I’m saying is some of the issues with qualifying include: *heat & humidity: check *concajoke reffing: check *experience local road trip conditions: check what it lacks is the game day intensity. That matters, but a lot of what makes going to Honduras or Costa Rica or Panama or Mexico has been experienced already either in the previous cycles, or via U20 and U17 roadies and qualifying tournaments. Secondly I’d argue that experience didn’t help the ‘17 side and the ‘09 team won away in Honduras despite lacking experience, scoring the most we ever had and if Donovan hadn’t gotten swine flu maybe we best Mexico in Mexico that cycle. The ‘97 te never having played a road hex game in Costa Rica still produced our best result ever there: a 3-2 loss that was back and forth till the final 15 unlike the usual —- kickings we received in ‘01-‘17. I just don’t buy the experienced argument. Our results were worse the more experienced we were w/playing down there. Give me young, hungry, players that are prepared and aren’t playing scared or overconfident. Give me that golden mean.
The only point I'm making is only a couple of the wing players have demonstrated consistency at club or international level. That doesn't mean none of these guys can't succeed. They just haven't shown much in the way of consistent performances.
That is interesting. I would say that if the player is eligible, then he is. Who knows, he could be called in next camp. Ignoring eligible players seems like a self-defeating proposition. In the end, I think Yueill will be given more chances. I don't expect him to do well, but I hope to be wrong.
I'm not seeing the Tyler Boyd - Ethan Finlay comparison... to me Finlay seems like he's all speed not much skill, almost like a better (and certainly less injury prone) Josh Gatt. Boyd is just not all that good, he's just streaky and when he's on a hot streak scoring goals as he is now that will inevitably lead to "hey what about this guy?" chatter... On a totally unrelated note, I assumed Finlay was taller than Boyd, I picture the former as lean and the latter as stocky... Wikipedia says Finlay is 5'9 and Boyd is 6'0 lol Edit: after seeing these pics of Boyd dwarfed by Jordan Morris and... Pulisic?? I'm even more confused lol https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/2019/06/qa-getting-to-know-tyler-boyd
Yank Abroad We aren't giving nearly enough credit to the job Pellegrino Matarazzo has done with VfB Stuttgart.Last season, they finished 2nd in the 2. Listening to the USA Soccer podcast, I learned that Nicholas Gioacchini was born and raised in Kansas City, English is his first language and that he moved around as a kid following his Italian father's pasta selling career. He also said his mother is Jamaican so he may have other options.
Watching Jedi and Fulham against Wolves. Wolves had a goal called back right before half that was onsides even after the VAR thorough breakdown called back. When it is that close.............you have to give the goal. Whats worse is he looked "on" anyways with the line by line analysis going down to the millimeter. That is obscene calling that goal out. Fulham look like a premier league team minus a forward, as they have much of the season. They are extremely lucky to be tied right now, Wolves were done hard on that halftime decision.
Robinson was excellent on both sides of the ball, with multiple key passes and crosses. Fulham look done though after a Traore 90th minute dagger. Weah looked dynamic in his 10-15 minutes helping Lille in their victory march against Metz.
He is no Lovitz and it is clear that Dest should be moved out of his preferred position so Cannon can do whatever he does... 1380648694626840576 is not a valid tweet id
I saw what you did there. I remember when I spent decades thinking Bernard Sumner (of New Order) was singing: "Anyone would make you a hot dog too/what do you want me to believe..../" in their third single off "Technique" (Run). Alas, I was totally wrong, he was actually singing, "Anyone would think you were hard done too/what do you want me to believe"/ Problem was, despite a huge fondness for Monty Python, The Young Ones, and Black Adder, I'd never heard the expression "hard done." Deciphering lyrics was just way harder before the internet. Grrrr, kids these days.
