Janine Beckie profile: http://www.fifa.com/womensolympic/n...es-canada-call-was-the-right-one-2819456.html Janine Beckie was training with USA’s U-20 side when she received a call one day from Andrew Olivieri, the head of the Canadian Soccer Association’s youth set-up, who was on the lookout for new talent. He had an offer to make to the talented forward, who was born in Highlands Ranch, Colorado: to play instead for the country where her parents and three brothers were born. Shedding more light on the proposal, Beckie told FIFA.com: “He asked me if I wanted to join them and do some training, with no strings attached. If I didn’t like it, then that was fine. But I did like it. In fact, I loved it. I felt right at home.”

Profiles of some of the Afghan NT players: http://www.girlpowerorg.com/afghanistan-wnt-efforts Marjan Haydaree is 18 years old and lives in San Francisco, CA. In 2011, I was 13 and they asked me to go to Qatar for a friendly match. That was the first time I got to meet all the girls. It was a little hard for me and my farsi isn’t that good, so it was hard for me to communicate but it was a good experience seeing a new culture and environment and learning from their stories, it was totally new for me. We won that game in Qatar 2-0 and I scored, which was a really great feeling, scoring for my national team. I went with the AFFWNT again for the second SAFF games in Sri Lanka in 2012, and we ended up in the semifinals but lost. I scored 2 goals that tournament, against Pakistan and Nepal. Aorzala "Oreo" Atmar is 16 years old and lives in California. Like a lot of other girls on this team, my parents moved from Afghanistan because of the war. My mom moved to America before my dad did. My dad went to Pakistan during the war and when the war was over, returned to Afghanistan to continue his work as a doctor. When he came to America, I was born and saw him try to get his job back as a doctor in the US and fight to keep his career without having to go back to school. A lot of my drive and push to keep fighting came from watching my dad’s determination to keep his career. My cousin played on the men’s national team, and when I knew we could do that, people from America could play, I was 13 and I really wanted to do this. I had no idea how to get there until I met Coach Haley Carter at my tournament and that was my spark, I really wanted to do this and I have my opportunity and I need to take it.
