Thanks to those keeping the thread real. However I’m off to watch France and Norway and am leaving this thread.
Well, there you go, @Timon19. . That's perfect. You can go wild over there, and we can agree that further posts on that subject here are offtopic, yes?
Nah. Despite the attempt to cleave off the criticism, the discussion is much better here, despite the whines. See Airox for how to, ya know, talk about the game, which you allegedly pine for so fervently.
then they should not be used in comparing the scores/behaviors on both sides. where the built in rules had no goal difference weight at all, making the game a poor comparison for this one. no. the types of games/situations being definitely not equal speaks even more powerfully against meaningfully comparing the resulting scores/behaviors of the winning teams. as others have pointed out, when a weak thailand still has sweden to play, and sweden knows that 8 would better our result. not to me. they are not subdued. they still roar and scream and grab each other with great intensity. inwardly directed and not showing off? depends on the individual fan view. this is exactly what the uswnt did. they did not direct anything at a thai player or at the thai bench. but this is, of course, why it is personal/cultural/sport specific. there will likely be no agreement here. i see no problem at all with the uswnt, or germany, or thailand scoring hard until the whistle goes, and celebrating every one of their goals in their own inimitable style. i accept that some view it differently.
Really? Where? I'm pretty sure someone else used it. In any case, I get why you keep seeing that written.
What does that have to do with the U.S. ladies? Has someone, in the history of the world, behaved worse than they did? Absolutely. If the Germans were being racist? F*ck them! So, people that have behaved worse than the U.S. women did: The German men's team, the KKK, who else ya got? I'm not seeing what your point is.
mmmm, I disagree. The ladies have represented themselves well in the past. (with the exception of Solo, of course). There is a big difference between being the big dog and being the bully. We'll see.
As a side note, the score would have noticeably less and the conversation probably wouldn’t be occurring if their keeper wasn’t god awful. 4 goals easily at least initially saveable by her. Are they simply to stop shooting the ball out of mercy?
Asinine streak? Please list all the other players that have scored in 5 consecutive World Cup games... We'll wait.
It's a silly streak, especially when you purposely put a player into a game that is WELL out of hand in order to preserve it. Does she get a trophy for this streak? No, but she does score a goal in stoppage time of a 12-0 game. SO worth it.
Has anyone (like a journalist, not someone from this board) actually asked a Thai player how they felt about it? I haven’t seen anything, but I’m sure someone has. I thought Carlie, Alex, and many others went out of their way to connect with the Thai players after. More than the obligatory handshake. I appreciated seeing it and feel that speaks more to their sportsmanship than the score or the celebrations.
Sports in general have had a significant increase in what is considered acceptable celebration with the current generation. Even the NFL has relaxed its celebration rules in acknowledgment of this fact. People who don't understand that, don't watch a whole bunch of sports...
Make up your mind, weren't you the guy who criticized the US for not subbing out Morgan? I'm sure you read the coaches mind that that was the sole reason to put Lloyd in the game.
On Grant Wahl's Planet Futbol podcast on the game he quoted both a Thai player and the coach as being fine with it.
But it easily could add thousands to endorsement contracts. Since it hurt no one why not give her the chance to keep the streak alive. Few will remember exactly how she got the streak but many will remember that she got the streak. I say as long as it does not hurt the team's chances in a World Cup give her every chance in the upcoming games to extend the streak even if the score is as lopsided as this was.
Given cultural differences regarding the keeping of and saving of face, even if the Thai players were steaming mad, it is unlikely they'd outwardly express it. On the US side, again, I would hope Lloyd would play peacemaker after using Thailand as training dummies in order to extend a silly streak.
Lloyd went on for Lavelle around the hour mark. Her streak was in jeopardy by the coach's squad selection until she got subbed on, like-for-like.
Citation needed. Yes, in 10 years I will remember how many consecutive WC games a player scored in across multiple tournaments. Especially since I have no clue who the current best streakholder is. Lloyd is a big-time player and everyone knows it. It would be interesting to give someone not on the wrong side of 30 a half hour, no?
I'm not a professional soccer statistician so I have no idea if she could lose a streak for consecutive games scoring in a game she didn't play in...
Right? It seems it would actually *endanger* her streak to sub her in so late. More likely, as the announcers were speculating, Lloyd wants to be starting or at least getting minutes, and she was probably playing to push her name up the team sheet.
I assume so, but I saw a headline or 2 along the lines of "USWNT brings Thailand players to tears in mauling, etc" with pictures of a player wiping her ideas post game... But actually asking someone would be too much work. Much easier just to run sensationalism, etc
