http://www.suntimes.com/output/telander/cst-spt-rick17.html WUSA demise no knock on women's sports September 17, 2003 BY RICK TELANDER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST The timing was pretty bad, you have to admit. The WUSA folded Monday, just six days before the Women's World Cup begins its 32 games at six venues around the United States. It would have been nice, maybe even decent and humane, to let the league go under after the women's championship was completed more than three weeks from now... (Text of copyrighted article removed)
Good point in the article There was some good points in the article: "There are too many entertainment options in our country, too many TV channels, too many sports already competing for our viewing and rooting and, yes, spending pleasure." ..."Out of the good cheer of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics came two women's pro basketball leagues and one softball league." ..."One of those hoops leagues is gone, the other is declining, and the softball league is taking its last gasps." "Nobody wanted to see this stuff, just as we wouldn't watch pro luge leagues or pommel horse leagues, even though we love those sports when the Olympics bring them into our homes every four years. Yes, there is a bit of the female sports bias involved here, but don't blame American consumers for not buying something they don't want. A women's game too often looks like a slower, weaker edition of the men's game. And who watches the men's pro soccer league, anyway? Maybe we want our daughters and sisters to have sports opportunities galore. That doesn't mean they have to make a living doing it."
The usual "waah-waah" when anything new comes along. Nobody, Rick? Or you didn't want to see this stuff. If you didn't want to see this stuff, you certainly exercised your right by not buying tickets...but you can't speak for me. More and more people every year, Rick. Since you obviously aren't paying attention you didn't know that. So go back to that high-quality Northwestern University gridiron you know and love so well and leave us the hell alone. I know Rick Telander will never see that, but it sure is theraputic.
