Sellout coming? I know everyone is focused on this weekend's clashof number 1 and number 2, but next weekend the Freedom travel to Carolina to play and all indications are for a sellout. Now thew new stadium is 10,000 or 12,000 I bleieve so this would be close to a doubling of attendance. Might be significant that Mia is playing again in NC but its good to see a WUSA game garnering attendance approaching some of the MLS teams.

That's not all that bad, considering. It was a game between the two worst teams in the league, neither with much hope of making the playoffs, in a game that meant nothing. It could have been worse.
I was there yesterday, and I think that total is low. Maybe Villanova is counting paid admissions only and not comps, but it seemed like there were around 8,500 yesterday, what with it being Girl Scout sleepover night. Paul
"It was a game between the two worst teams in the league, neither with much hope of making the playoffs, in a game that meant nothing." AND star players for both teams were missing for the US-Norway friendly. (I do hope the league and the USSF can do a better job of coordinating schedules next year. Hey, a guy can dream.)
I'm guessing that number included no-shows, as there's no way there were anywhere near 8,384 people actually there. I bet a bunch of folks bought tickets to see Mia, and then didn't bother to attend when they found out Mia wouldn't be there.
As of July 21,2002 Average Att. - 6724 Median Att. - 6090 PS XYZ do you have a list of games for last season like the 2002 list you started the thread with?
No, I wish I did. The numbers were all in last year's attendance thread which is now, unfortunately, gone. Considering that there wasn't a whole lot to attract fans to this game except free tickets.
Why, so that both leagues can inflate their numbers artificially? What is needed is reasonably sized stadia where fans can feel part ot the game. Piggybacking on an MLS match makes for a very long afternoon of soccer for fans of both leagues. There are some cost savings, but there is also some revenue that is not gained by one organization or other.
Attendance Right now, people don't want to go see womens soccer. The WUSA needs to find a way to get a fan base. That could start with advertisments, youth games before pro games, or double headers with the US national team. Also teaming up with MLS teams would be a good idea. Another reason people don't watch WUSA games on TV is because they are on at exactly the same time as MLS games, and right now people would rather watch MLS more than WUSA. With a few smart moves, the WUSA could totally increase in popularity because of the many young supportive girls that play soccer.
Obviously someone who has been closely following the one-year old league. Last year's 84 game season averaged 8,104. Washington led the way (14,421) on the strength of an inaugural match crowd of 34,148 and one or two DCU doubleheaders. The overall average is down 17%, although San Diego has improved. Atlanta (11,092 last year) moved to a smaller stadium (15,011) so they won't have the 20K blockbusters to boost their average. I would expect the average to creep up during these final 3 weeks although the Wednesday night matches will hurt. And then there's New York.
Jeezus friggin' christ DC fans!!! 7/24/02 Breakers v Freedom RFK 5,847 Power v Charge Villanova 7,469
Re: Jeezus friggin' christ DC fans!!! These numbers are not bad The DC number is only 150 less than their median average. For a Wednesday not bad. The Philly attendence was 700 greater than their median. For a Wednesday that's great. I don't know what you're looking for Fear but attendence will not increase 1000 a week. Take what you can get and be happy with it.
Those 7,400 saw a great game. Phily has drawn well this year. Are they going to change to real turf next year?

7/27/02 Charge v Breakers Nickerson 6,017 Spirit v Freedom RFK 24,240 Yeah, yeah, yeah I know..DH numbers ain't "true" atttendance figures blah blah blah...and it certainly wasn't 24,240 at the start of the match and at halftime or towards the end of the match but these are the "official" numbers. Well you show me a better method of counting these type of numbers. But in the meantime shut up about 'em. Power v Cyberrays Spartan 7,183
