Answer: No I would not. We don't need Twellman. There are other strikers out there that would be willing to come to play for us and take Xavier-type pay. Andy Cole comes to mind.
Of all the faces that danced through my head when I clicked on this thread, Twellman was not even close to being one of them. Great MLS player. not as good as Landon.
I was ready to point out that some currently in-form player from one of the top European leagues was not a good bet because he probably only had one more year left at top form. That would be a reasonable discussion. Talking about any other player in MLS right now, except maybe Beckham, is not even a talking point. Twellman and an equivalent MLS player who is in his mid 20s and another decent MLS player for Donovan, and maybe people start talking. Maybe. There's one player in this league who, at his best, in this league, can take the ball with no help from his own penalty area and score. Multiple times in one game. We have that guy, and he's not Beckham.
No way. Twellman is a good MLS player, but never do we trade Donovan for him. Can you imagine the frustration on Beckham's face after Twellman whiffs for the fifteenth time in a game, or volley's a point blank shot right into the keeper's face?
