How does all of this compare to previous world cups? Statistical comparisons as well as subjective impressions on what is different this time around would be interesting.

That might take a while but I can probably do it as far back as FIFA has match reports.

I have the stats from Japorea and Germany, as I keep exactly the same statistics as you do, only I count all YCs shown, whether they result in reds or not!

And these are the statistics for the 29 referees selected for South Africa based on their participation in FIFA competitions over the past 18 months or so.

I appreciate what you are doing, but I can't think of valid reason for ignoring second cautions. Just as match reports should detail all cards shown, so should any analysis.

OK, but just for the World Cup.

Agreed, that is how the statistics are kept.

They're not kept that way for MLS as far as I've even been able to tell which is why I'm used to doing it differently.

    After day 3:

The Argentina - Nigeria match has considerably less fouls than the other matches. Were there really just less fouls or was Stark just quite generous (maybe there is a better word, but you know what I mean)?

Thanks for making the change; I appreciate your flexibility.

Using the MLS as a guide to how things should be done is a slippery slope. We've seen all manner of weird approaches in MLS. Two of my least favorite surviving policies are listing the visiting team first and the "playoffs" - which make the regular season as nearly as irrelevant as the NHL's.

Those policies aren't considered weird by most US sports fans.

Ideally, MC would have separate columns for straight reds and total reds. That way 2nd cautions could be calculated if needed. As it is, 2nd cautions are basically being double counted.

That's why I like to do it differently. It's one act of misconduct and it gets counted twice and inflates the numbers.

For the record, the stats section on the FIFA match reports has three categories:

    Cautions
    Expulsions due to Second Caution
    Direct Expulsions

For a second yellow, they add 1 to the second caution stat and zero to the caution stat. So for example, the Serbia-Ghana match has 4 cautions, 1 expulsion due to second caution, and 0 direct expulsions.

Seeing as you don't write up reports for two cautions and also a red, you just write up the one report for send off for 2YC, that makes the most sense IMO.

    Ding.

With a 2CT situation, your match report should indicate something along these lines:

    23' C UB
    47' C PI
    47' S 2CT

Three cards shown, three entries. Any other way is incorrect. Try submitting a match report at a regional or national event that doesn't capture the events this way and you may as well go home.

That Benquerenca foul count really sticks out.
