Every world cup has it's superstars who see their chances of playing in the cup threatened or eliminated altogether due to injuries in the months preceding the world cup; 4 years ago Michael Ballack was the biggest name in this category, I'm a US fan so I have to mention Charlie Davies who missed the world cup because of a car crash the november before, and I recall some players like Torres, Drogba and R0bben who faced pre-world cup injuries but recovered in time. We have, to my knowledge, the first big one for Brazil 2014 - England's Theo Walcott http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/newsid=2257688/index.html?intcmp=newsreader_news_caption bad news for England who are in a difficult enough group as it is. And it's a real shame for Walcott who was controversially not selected in 2010 and didn't get off the bench in 2006
So you meant Walcott is or will be a "superstar" in next WC2014? Ballack best years were way back in early 2000's (or WC2002) to be specific. So 4 years ago, Ballac was already 33 and hardly a good player anyway ../..
what I mean is for this thread to be a place where people post news about notable injured players who have/had a chance of going to the world cup.
understood .. but your example is not so typical per se. Walcott still has a slim chance to be at next WC depends on how fast he recovers . In plus he is still young to have another WC2018 or more ...
Walcott wasn't guaranteed a spot in the squad anyway. His recent form may have brought him to the spotlight a bit more, but he's just another average player.
Falcao suffered a knee injury against a fourth division side in the French Cup. Had to be stretchered off and extent yet to be officially determined. But lots of speculation that he damaged his ACL and could miss the tournament.
Come on brother..... There's no replacement for Falcao. He's top class and has been playing big games for a while now. Jackson Martinez would be a good option but to match Falcao would take a lot
Falcao has had bad days in yellow too. It is not like he was perfect. For instance he really did not score many goals outside of Barranquilla. There is enough time to try and figure things out.
Colombia has had problems with their strikers for a while (multiple qualifiers) until Falcao and Teo took over the starting job up top.
And they both have gone through a bit of a dry spell. But it is nice to see a guy like Victor Ibarbo (who had no prior experience under Pekerman) score a spectacular goal against Belgium in a recent friendly. There's other options out there. Jackson Martinez, Luis Muriel, Carlos Bacca, Teo. They just need to be given a chance. There is a lot of time between now and June. Pekerman should be a little concerned, but he knows what to do.
This is huge..... Falcao out for six months.. Soo F*** pissed... 16 years waiting to go back to the World Cup and we lost our best striker. Speechless !!!!!!!!!!
He's a very religious person.. but there's no way he'll make it.. there's not enough time to recover . It's a minimum 6 month recovery time plus the roster has to be turned by early June. I don't see how we'll take him at 50% at best with very few playing time if any.
In the end of may you got give 30 players rosters, i bet he will be on this one. But at early june, the list should be the final one with 23. And that will depend on his recovery and Pekerman. Robben in 2010 got also a bad injury and only played from Round of 16 on. Perhaps Pekerman can do this.
Gaston Ramirez is out for 6 to 8 weeks, so barring something else happening he'll be back well before the WC. Same with Lovren. http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/25848751
