Serbia up 3 x 1 on Cameroon right now. That means a win vs the Swiss will already put us through the 2nd round. Won't guarantee 1st place though.
Game ended 3 x 3. Dramatic game with end to end action. With a win we still go through. The bad part is that Cameroon will have a chance in the final match day and will come to play.
He missed a golden chance. Now they're 2x0 down. Uruguay x Ghana for a knockout round spot against Brazil is going to be a hell of a match.
While that handball interfered with the play hugely, contact with the supporting arm of a falling player is not supposed to be a PK. That means both PKs Portugal has gotten in this WC were not supposed to be given.
To me, that penalty should be called. But you're right that it isn't a penalty by the current interpretation of the law about supporting arm. It's hard to define things clearly and not end up with situations like these.
I agree - that said, the call has been made and as of now, the match is over. Unfortunate for Uruguay, but Portugal deserved this win, whereby it has now avenged 2018. Portugal is in the round of 16, and I don't think the Republic of Korea will achieve more than a draw. Yes, anything can happen, as Japan showed us against Germany. But it's safe to say Portugal and Brazil won't meet in the round of 16.
That handball was totally unintentional unless he’s got eyes behind his back. I was totally surprised. Perhaps maybe because it changed the direction of the ball ? Having said that, Portugal did deserve the win, and it’s about fuking time this coach put in their best player Arascaeta.
Ecuador vs Senegal set to start now. Let’s cheer on (lightly) our CONMEBOL partners to go on to the next round. Come on Valencia, do your thang.
Senegal PK up 1X0, damn. Those Senegal fans outfits are unbelievable, lol. Landon Donovan “it’s very important to play well during the World Cup.” NO SHIT !! USA - IRAN few hours away !!!
Senegal are through. If either Argentina or Uruguay don't make it to the KO round, this will be CONMEBOL's worst showing since 2002.
It doesn't help that Colombia, who has often made it to the 2nd round didn't qualify and we only have 4 instead of 5 teams as Peru lost it's intercontinental playoff qualifier game. Back in 02 it was only us and Ecuador who made it to the 2nd round and after the R16 it was only us.
I feel bad for Ecuador. This is a team which has shown gradual improvement over time, and they can be a challenge in WCQ. They've defeated Brazil - and they, like us and Paraguay, have defeated Argentina in Argentina. They did well against the Netherlands and I wanted them to advance. After the first round of this tournament, I did not think Ecuador would have failed to advance and that it would have been the first CONMEBOL team to be eliminated. That said, with the 2026 World Cup being expanded to 48 teams (a decision I strongly oppose), CONMEBOL will have more participants. Ecuador will play in 4 years from now; I foresee it'll still be one of the strongest CONMEBOL teams after Brazil.
And US advances on a nail biter under second half domination by a clumsy Iranian team. Very strange that VAR was not even called that last minute possible PK. Congrats to the gringos who meet Netherlands Saturday morning.
