Also when Jamaica got their first ever goal at the WWC. And in general the atmosphere created by the Dutch fans- it was great to see that kind of support for a women's team. Those are the two not-USWNT-related things I'll remember the most. Best USWNT moment for me was Naeher's penalty save- I know the PK was poorly struck but she still had to guess right/keep foot on the line and with all the questions around her lack of big tournament experience going in it was great to see her step up in that moment (especially as a former Breakers fan from CT).
Non US: Asllani's great assist against Canada and her 3rd goal in the third place match. Lucy Bronze's stunner against Norway. Japan's cool goal against Netherlands Henry's goal against Brazil. Marta's post match speech. US: Rapinoe's 2nd goal against France. The PK save in the semi. Lavelle's goal in the final.
Anyone know why FIFA has not named an all tournament team? Usually they have a technical team that does player evaluations (at least in the men's tournaments) and does this. All we have were the awards that were made right after the finals.
Is this WWC a disappointment for Lyon? No member of the champion is currently playing in Lyon while several had been. The main squad France was out in the 1/4. The Ace Ada didn't come. The playmaker Marozsan was injured and Germany was out in the 1/4. The back Kumagai gave the Netherlands the winning PK while it's not mainly her fault. The winger Van Der Sanden got into the final but didn't play well and was put on bench in the last 2 games. Bronze is the best Lyon player while she could not get into the final.
Yeah, but they are not in the team anymore. I don't think either has played well in Lyon, especially Rapinoe. Not sure why. I guess Bronze will win the UEFA player award this year since none of the American players play in Europe so they are out of the contest.
She only played one game this World Cup, but you've made Brian super sad. There was a funny segment of van de Sanden and Brian going to some market in that blog series with a group of professional players.
I wasn't overly impressed by Rapinoe, but after a rewatch, she was good in the final in my opinion. Her tournament as a whole was probably fine/good, but it just wasn't quite Golden/Silver/Bronze Ball level for me. I think Morgan really had only one poor full match, and that was against Spain where things got quite physical. Notable impact against France and England, and I thought she did well to force van Veenandaal into acrobatics in the first half of the final. I didn't think either shot was a high quality chance, particularly the shot outside the box. Eh, I don't think that can be really used against Lyon. I know they played the eventual champions early in the knockouts, but a lot of people still keep letting France fool them into thinking they'll do better in a major competition. (Of course, now that I say this again, just watch France beat the Netherlands on route to the Euro 2021 title.) In short, yes, but it was always likely to be a disappointment.
Well there is no superwoman level of play in this USWNT like 2015 Lloyd, 2007 Marta or 2011 Sawa. I'm ok with Rapinoe with the Golden Ball. The best of this WWC in my opinion is Asllani. There are many drama in their locker room and it's exploding now. It's not a big surprise when you see Renard is not the captain.
I thought so as well. She was outstanding in every match I watched her play. Quick and decisive with passes and always a threat to disrupt things.
Let's please take a moment to remember those souls we lost during the FIFA Women's World Cup. 🙏🏻⚰️ #FIFAWWC pic.twitter.com/6jyk56wxgc— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) July 10, 2019
There are always many USA posters on the women's threads. It's in our language. Many of us follow the international game, there are a lot of Americans playing and coaching around the world. Plus, we won! We want to keep on living it as long as possible.
I want to heap praise on Ms. Marley for supporting the Jamaican team when their own federation was sorely lacking.
Overall when I look back, I think this France WNT probably has the best or 2nd best player squad, but they weren't able to make a very good team compare to US and England. A lot of the tactics/line ups were questionable like benching Thiney VS Brazil, not subbing off Torrent quickly when she's obviously out of gas and keep trying to go from the wings rather than combine the play in the middle VS the US. Probably the back room drama was a big reason.
Oh, that was the right call. Note the number of long shots Henry had. The problem was not the tactics, it was the execution. And as I noted in the match thread, there were many poor setup or final balls. But the tactics were right. That was probably the best match of the tournament. Or the Scotland v. Argentina match.
