Wasn't the first game at the football stadium a shit show this year? From what I recall, there was no shade and people spent most of their time looking for cover and water.
I’m not certain long term, but not short term. “A San Diego investment group led by the local Sycuan tribe and Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour "has been regularly meeting with MLS and is expected to submit an expansion bid next month" at the league’s BOG meeting in Brooklyn, according to sources. A team could be playing at San Diego State Univ.’s Snapdragon Stadium "as soon as 2024." The Sycuan and the Mansour Group "both issued statements that, while not divulging specifics of the proposed bid, confirmed their interest in professional soccer." Sycuan is "known to have been actively involved in pursuing an MLS expansion franchise in San Diego." SDSU AD John David Wicker has indicated that he "would offer flexible financial terms" for use of the stadium (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/27).
Las Vegas bid held up by prohibitive construction costs, is the reason San Diego has jumped Vegas in line.
Snapdragon is a great stadium. A freakish heat wave hit San Diego the weekend of SDSU’s first home football game and it was over 100°. That is not typical for San Diego. Qualcomm was in the exact same spot for decades it’s fine.
That is a relief. Hope it works out for them and they can build on what they've already created with SD Loyal.
A mere technicality. I’m sure those names can always be bought. Also, they can buy their academy as well as they are one of the best in the country.
True, but most teams want their own identity unless your looking at a Seattle that had a huge history and an owner who was part of both. Edit: As to the academy, no need. Here in STL, Gallagher is a huge club. Players are leaving if they have a chance to play for CITY's academy. It's free and it's a pipeline.
Not only Seattle. Vancouver , Portland and San Jose also dipped into the NASL history. Wish the Earthquakes will have retained the old red colors and logo though... I just hope it's not another FC, SC or United.
Been in the low 20,000's for actual butts in the seats which is below what was expected before the season but there are some legit reasons. A bunch of the early season games were played in the afternoon for TV reasons and they coincided with a record heat wave. Then the team has been disappointing on the field. Finally they misjudged the price point for tickets making them way to expensive compared to what people were used to when they played at QUALCOMM. But now that the prices have dropped and the games are at night we're seeing attendance creep up. I'm obviously biased but I think San Diego is a great market for MLS. It's a really international city that's been embracing soccer since I was a kid in the 80's with a thriving youth soccer culture. Always in the top 10 (usually top 5) TV markets during the World Cup, and has had record support for the Wave. I'm not going to lie and say that San Diego is an amazing sports market overall like Boston, or Seattle but the Padres got 3 million fans this year at Petco and the Chargers used to sell out their home games on the rare occasions that they were any good. And speaking of the Chargers they left us as a city desperate for something to get behind, see the Padres support. Finally the proximity to LA isn't a factor. San Diego is a completely different sports market and their isn't a lot of support for LA teams in the area.
--------------- Never had any doubt SD not supporting LA teams My daughter went to SDSU and went to a few football games and over many, many years, lots of soccer games as close same day road trips. Not sure how the Loyal fits in. If MLS comes, any thoughts? Will the Loyal be an orphan like Charlotte Independence when CFC came in? Also, isn't the rugby team moving to Snapdragon ? Could you imagine a stadium have SDSU football, NWSL, MLS and rugby? Great for the $$ coming in, but I would worry about the field holding up
Yeah that wasn't aimed at you specifically saw other people saying SD was to close to a two team LA. Your guess is as good as mine. I'm a season ticket holder but not particularly active in any of the Supporters Clubs. I haven't heard of any connections between the MLS group and the Loyal. I've seen some Loyal fans saying they are sticking with the Loyal no matter what but I suspect most of us will migrate. I hope they offer the Loyal ownership group a piece to keep a connection but wouldn't be required for me. We had the Loyal, Wave, and Legion all playing at USD this spring and summer and the field did pretty well. Had USD football, Loyal and Legion last fall as well. Never had all four together though but SDSU's gotta pay for their new toy somehow.
I may have watched too much Star Wars lately, because I was trying to figure out what Jawas had to do with San Diego.
