Re: Possible Deadlock? Hopefully FIFA would rule that a special playoff match would be played, instead of drawing lots. Or FIFA could make the tiebreaker discipline. The team with less yellow and cards advances. If the tiebreaker is corners then congrats to England.
Re: Possible Deadlock? It sounds interesting in thoery but U.S. games don't end 0-0. Maybe this, but highly unlikely. England 3-3 Slovenia USA 1-1 Algeria
Re: Possible Deadlock? a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches; b) goal difference in all group matches; c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches. If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows: d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned; e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned; f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned; g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/competition/56/42/69/fifawcsouthafrica2010inhalt_e.pdf So in your scenario they would draw lots.
Re: Possible Deadlock? Thanx. I hope there is no hanky panky business with the draw should it come down to that. g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee
Group C Advancement Scenarios I don't think this was in the group, and I just did this for another forum. Slovenia 4 points +1 GD 3 goals scored (1-0 ALG, 2-2 USA) United States 2 points Even 3 goals scored (1-1 ENG, 2-2 SLO) England 2 points Even 1 goal scored (1-1 USA, 0-0 ALG) Algeria 1 point -1 GD 0 goals scored (0-1 SLO, 0-0 ENG) Slovenia-England US-Algeria SLO wins, USA wins: Slovenia first, USA second. Outright. SLO wins, USA/ALG Draw: Slovenia first, USA second. Outright. SLO wins, ALG wins: Slovenia first, Algeria second. Outright SLO/ENG Draw, USA wins: USA first (unless the USA only wins by 1 and Slovenia score more goals vs. England than the US vs. Algeria), SLO second. Flip them in the parenthetical case. Both matches end in draws: Slovenia first, outright. US second unless England score at least three more goals vs. Slovenia than the US. If England scores two more, lots are drawn. SLO/ENG Draw, ALG wins: Slovenia first, Algeria second. Outright. ENG wins, USA wins: The team which wins by the larger margin is first. In case of tied margins, USA first unless England score at least 3 more than the US. If 2 more, then lots. Both winners qualify in this scenario. ENG wins, USA/ALG Draw: England first. Slovenia second, outright. ENG wins, ALG wins: England first. Algeria would get second if either margin in either game is more than 1 goal. If both margins in this scenario are 1, then Algeria would need to score 4 more than Slovenia. 3 more in the double-1 scenario? Lots.
Re: Possible Deadlock? In case of such a deadlock they should just play a 30 minute playoff game and if no one scores (which is likely) then they should have a SHOOTOUT to determine the winner. I know it's not the best way but it's MUCH better than just a stupid coin flip!!
Re: Group C Advancement Scenarios we need to win with a 2 goal difference to have 100 % chances to go through
Re: Group C Advancement Scenarios Slovenia goes to the second round outright in 7/9 possible outcomes, and still a possibility in eighth? And in 5/9, we are also outright the first in the group. Couldn't wish for more.
Re: Group C Advancement Scenarios If I may, each team will be looking at what they need to do. So, here is the US-centric version. USA wins ENG wins: The team which wins by the larger margin is first. In case of tied margins, USA first unless England score at least 3 more than the US. If 2 more, then draw lots. Both winners qualify in this scenario. SLO/ENG Draw: USA first (unless the USA only wins by 1 and Slovenia score more goals vs. England than the US vs. Algeria), Slovenia second. Flip them in the parenthetical case. SLO wins: Slovenia first, USA second. USA draws ENG wins: England first. Slovenia second. SLO/ENG Draw: Slovenia first, outright. US second unless England score at least three more goals vs. Slovenia than the US vs. Algeria. If England scores two more, lots are drawn. SLO wins: Slovenia first, USA second. USA loses Life as we know it ends
Re: Possible Deadlock? Ha. FIFA and fair play. Anyway, if England and the United States were to play last, and everything was tied, they could have gone to penalties, like Czech and Turkey could have in Euro 2008. But no matter. If's and butt's were candy and nuts...
Re: Possible Deadlock? Is that a FIFA rule or just a UEFA rule? Because I have to say, it worked out fantastically in Euro 2008.
Re: Possible Deadlock? if england v slovenia ends 2-2 and usa v algeria ends 0-0 it wll go to drawing of lots between england and usa. (there may be another combination but i haven't checked any others)
