The best (and worst) part about it is that there's a real chance he spurns the offer (assuming it is made) to coach Bulgaria....Bulgaria of all places.

Sadly the Bulgaria job looks pretty good compared to the Irish one right now.

    Completely agree.

IMO Venables is the only viable candidate left after the FAI didnt check up on Hiddink, Rehagel etc.

BTW what in the name of all that is embarrassing is Given still doing at newcastle? Has he no ambition but just to collect his big paycheck every week? Long ago given up on the other 2 Dubs playing for them.

Shay is the only reason we're not battling Leeds down in League One this year.

I'll weep openly the day he leaves the club.

    Latest rumour.

Former Fulham and Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez is to be interviewed for the vacant Republic of Ireland job.

Sanchez, sacked by Fulham in December, is expected to meet with the three-man panel set up by the FAI to search for a successor to Steve Staunton.
Ray Houghton, Don Givens and Don Howe are expected to meet Sanchez although he is not regarded as a frontrunner.
It is believed the FAI hopes to name a manager before the end of January as the Republic face Brazil on 6 February. Givens was in Bulgaria on Tuesday with FAI chief executive John Delaney and president David Blood to fiinalise the fixtures for the Republic's forthcoming World Cup qualifying campaign

I'd rather be coach of Bulgaria than Ireland at the moment! They have a good emerging young team.

I want Souness. He has the best CV and is the right age. Faling that I'd take Tommy Burns and he would provide continuity. Failing that I'd go for Burley. I don't think McGee and Davies has done enough in the game to be considered yet. Saying that I don't know much about McGee's career in England. He has done a bloody good job at Motherwell.

This guy would be great for Ireland or Scotland

Hes got the big team experience and should do well with a lower set of expectations

This is true. Although he used spend most of his time gathering up the players from the pub of a Saturday evening.

Bit different managing the national team though, at least he'll be dealing with fellow Englishmen in the the main.

    Bloody good point.

He'd have to deal with a traitorous little weegie wretch as well.

Perfectly plausible, virtually all-Premiership lineup. S. Reid the only English-born player. McGeady and Carsley are the only other non-Irish born players who I expect to figure for us in the next campaign.
