The scarcity of data is worrisome, but even more problematic is that FIFA will be using data going back to 1971. How many countries had women's teams back then? And given the growth and development of the women's game since then, what possible relevance do results from the 1970's have to today?
Well, those teams that led the way for women's soccer in the 70s are some of the strongest today. Denmark, Switzerland, Mexico, Italy, France, England, Germany and Sweden. And since there was a paucity of teams, they mostly played each other.
since France eliminated Denmark from WWC, a buit surprised, Denmark is ahead... England over Japan... well, if Kelly Smith is healthy maybe...not without her though
Here are the pots: Pot 1 Pot 2 Pot 3 Pot 4 CHN FRA NGA CAN NOR RUS GHA KOR GER SWE BRA PRK AUS ARG JPN
I had the same problem with Scotland and Fleeting. With her, they are good. Canada isn't that low. It's the problem of going by matches within the Confederation. Then again, what I said about the Dutch has rubbed off. A team to watch out for. But by that margin, Spain should be higher. Mexico is 32! Come on.
That's from the new page. But considering these rankings, perhaps you should trust me more. Anyway, I think Fifa has gone to pot with those pots.
yeah mexico probably should be at least 10 places higher...... it's the problem I cited previously, too few matches between confederations except for the top tier in each confed.... GIGO... the top 10 are close to reality... afterwards the lack of data kills the rankings...
well, using human insight provides better ratings than the more rigid fixed model... the quality of play which the human mind can measure will give a better quality ratings... FIFA model basically uses results in a very fixed way... if you calculate the confidence intervals in FIFAS ratings, you'll find them to be enormous... and basically be very similar to you guys..
Kudos, DennisM. Those rankings must have taken a lot of research and care. I find them very plausible. Much appreciated.
Nigeria at 23 and ghana at 53 in the FIFA rankings is a joke. Ghana outside of the top 25 is unimaginable, but outside the top 50 ...
dennism is the most knowledgeable source on the world of female football... most of us are limited to the elite 10 or so... his spreads the entire breadth of the female game... ok, dennism we need a scouting report of the faroe islands ... univision once had them on during their WCQ coverage.. what about their female side.... only kidding dennism.. and I posted earlier, once you get outside the TOP 10, there's NOT sufficient data to evaluate teams... way to few inter confederation matches between those outside the top 10...
i don't understand why FIFA calculated games from 1971? the first WWC wasn't until 1991, they should have started then.
here's how it get calculated... http://www.fifa.com/en/rank/w/procedures.html Importance of a match creates MORE importance in the calculation and here's how the MALE version gets calculated with a very detailed example... http://www.fifa.com/en/rank/procedures.html I suspect the female version is very simlar...
"Had a little problem with my pot table. Pot 2 Pot 3 Pot 4 AUS ARG J PN" Table making is hard on this site.
Alternate ranking system Here's another ranking system. Very interesting: International Women's Soccer Rankings
Re: Alternate ranking system Australia 3rd??? I like the Matildas as much or more than anyone, but there's no way I would put them over the likes of USA, China, Sweden, Germany etc.... My guess is after trying to read how they got these ranking is, Australia is so high up on the list because of their pounding of Samoa, Cook Islands and PNG in the WC qualifiers. But those scores really prove nothing when comparing them to say the US playing China. You just can't compare the final scores. That list is just laughable. And I fully admit I know little to nothing about how rankings are done, but I think I could have pulled a more accurate one out of my ass. LOL But yeah, it was something interesting on a Friday afternoon when I'm wishing this day would end. Thanks!
That is almost entirely based on regional results from what I can tell from the rankings. However, because of skill and other things, European teams generally ranked higher. I mean your average European team is going to be better than your average South American or Asian side. That being said. Trinidad and Tobago shouldn't be that high. South Africa is more or less the third best team in Africa along with Cameroon.
