Davies and David are going to be playing in the junior varsity qualifying circuit while El Salvador plays in the Hex. Wonderful idea. ES has played well and earned it. But two big rising stars don't have a straightforward way to play their way in.
Keepers are: Milan Borjan, Red Star Belgrade. Maxime Crepeau, Vancouver starter. The third could be: Jayson Leutwiler, Blackburn Sebastian Breza, Bologna (young, recent purchase) Dayne St. Clair (recent MinnU draft pick, in San Antonio this year)
It is interesting. My eyes say Canada is the better team right now. But there's still something deep inside that says if they were to play a home/away playoff against each other El Salvador would find a way to advance. Their crazy home fanaticos would be a huge factor.
Last time they faced each other competitively was in the last WCQ. 1 tie and a 3-1 win for Canada. There was a friendly in 2017 which Canada lost 1-0. That was pre-Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies, Luca Cavallini just to name those. In 2020, don't see the same results happening
That is true. Hence, I implied that according to the eye test I think Canada would win. But the feeling still lingers when it comes to a big game or do-or-die series of games they would still find a way to slip on the banana peel.
It's a flip coin on the coach. The players are much more different and are used to those kind of situations which past national teams weren't. The loss against Haiti was a defensive collapse due to putting the wrong guys against them. The loss against the US was the same reason, wrong guys at defense which change the dynamics from the 1st game. What they both have in common is Davies at LB and teams pressing harder on Canada. When both Davies and David are upfront, teams are more cautious and press way less fearing the speedy counterattack. So the huge debate here is, where does Davies play? LB or winger? Also, should we use David as a striker or attacking midfield where he's also excellent?
It's not really about El Salvador. It's about the fact that the two guys who might be the biggest stars in CONCACAF a year from now are, as it stands, going to be playing in, like, the Turks and Caicos, to try a long-shot qualification based on things that happened years ago.
- The Sunday Express claim that Gent striker Jonathan David has made his way onto Chelsea's transfer wish list this summer. That said, Frank Lampard will have his work cut out to lure a player valued at £20m from Belgium to Stamford Bridge, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs also interested in snapping him up Great news for @CanadaSoccerEN : Chelsea transfer news: Blues want £20m Liverpool, Man Utd, Tottenham target Jonathan David | Football | Sport | https://t.co/iFIOzesYaF https://t.co/Gqf7KSSG97— Hugo Sham (@HugoSham) March 1, 2020 There's rumbling of Bayern Munich being interested
Yeah, every rumor seems to be a place he'd likely be a backup for at least a couple of years. I get that you get paid, but I'm surprised some of the Canadian fans are so excited.
I don't understand why fans shouldn't be excited. Just like Davies, he would have to prove he deserves to starts.
Sorry -- you should absolutely be excited. But those particular teams all seem to have very established strikers that will be very hard to unseat. If I were a Canadian fan, I'd want him to go somewhere he has a better shot at playing.
What's the Canadian Olympic qualifying team going to look like? Are any of the Euro based players going to play?
Hard to say as clubs aren't obligated to release players for this tournament, so we can forget David and Davies for the qualifiers. We'll have to see the final roster. In bold are players based in Europe. Players to watch: Sebastian Breza : Now on loan to Serie A Bologna Zorhan Bassong : Did very well as a FB when he played in a friendly for Canada. Bayern Munich joins other giants to acquire Jonathan David from Gent. What's interesting is that Bayern would be his preference so he could play with Alphonso Davies. Bayern have inquired about Gent's Canadian striker Jonathan David (20). David favors a move to the Bundesliga and is set to leave Gent this summer.
