Jeff Hunt confirms to CBC that the new name is Ottawa’s CPL team will be Atletico Ottawa.— Dan Séguin (@SeguinSports) January 30, 2020
I was under the impression that the CPL wanted local ownership groups for their teams. How do you view this? There are fans in MLS circles who are opposed to Red Bull and CFG owning teams in MLS. Are there any concerns that Atleti will properly fund the team, and not just use it as a branding exercise? A lot of people remember the failed Rayo OKC venture in the NASL. I am aware that Atleti has a significant difference in money when compared to Rayo,
It's been received very positively here. I think the ownership matters as we wouldnt want the likes of Rayo but local businessman Jeff Hunt is the key to be the bridge between the fans and the club in Spain. Hunt ownes the Ottawa 67s in the OHL and CFL Redblacks. The ownership looks very solid with that partnership. The other positive is their work in Liga MX with Atletico San Luis which seems to be working good. The fact that they are well intentioned is a good thing. La Liga is in constant communication with the league volunteering help and expertise...so it seems like they truly buy into the vision of the league and wants to be an important actor in it's success. Of course, they want to grow their brand abroad like Real & Barca so picking Canada after Mexico shows that they see the potential of football in Canada in the future. Canada being the richest country in the world who didn't have it's own league up until last year represent massive opportunity on ROI for them. Expansion fees a rumored to be around $10M. Lastly, they want to export their brand of football and philosophy to CPL and Ottawa...this will be an interesting team to watch. I'm not sure how City and Red Bull operates in the MLS, maybe you could shed some light
I just find it fascinating how different the views of foreign ownership are in leagues in North America. In the US, fans claim that the teams will be farm teams for their European overlords, at least among MLS fans anyways. More money from soccer people, and more expertise the better on this side of the ocean. Red Bull operates their New York team just like they do their other teams. They emphasize youth, and home grown academy talent. They've invested heavily in infrastructure. Red Bull Arena is the standard for Soccer Specific Arenas in the U.S. Their training/Academy Facility is one of the best in MLS, and they have expanded it since it first opened. As for CFG, it's tough to say, though they have only been at this for a few years in the US. Their academy started with U14's (?). They've been adding an age group each year since, and now the academy is bearing fruit. In terms of investment, outside of the first two seasons, they haven't really splashed the cash since on players (Villa, Pirlo, and Lampard haven't been replaced with name players).
Considering the numbers of Italo-Canadians into pro-soccer (most of them with the right passports), I can see Serie A becoming a point of entry for Canucks into Europe.
Funny you're talking about that... Roma is interested in CPL With Atleti in #CanPL and Lyon rumoured to be looking to join I asked if it was a coincidence or if international investment would be the norm.I was told the league was talking to “several other groups,” and that Roma in particular had shown interest.— Duane Rollins (@24thminute) February 1, 2020
I am fully behind the CPL but I'm not excited to see random Euro teams buying expansions teams in the league. 2 Euro owned teams in a league of 30 is ok, 2 Euro owned teams in a league of 9 is not good.
To think the rest of the season have Davies and David in their face for at least the next decade After another goal for 🇨🇦 Jonathan David (20) yesterday, @KAAGent have won every one of their matches in 2020. 💯David scored or assisted in each one of them. 🔥His season stats ⤵️✅ 30 starts⚽️ 16 goals🅰️ 10 assists🥈 2nd in Belgium - 12 goals🥈 2nd in the table🇨🇦🇨🇦 pic.twitter.com/i10kqFKncC— Football Wonderkids (@fbwonderkids) February 2, 2020
Liam Millar making his senior debut for Liverpool in the FA Cup FC Liverpool obviously not playing their first team. I like the crest but couldn't Atletico Madrid gone with the French pronunciation for Athletic? I mean branding I guess but Ottawa is heavily French Canadian right? Athletique Ottawa makes much more sense.
Not to derail this thread but I decided to look up Ottawa on Google Maps. I had no idea, not only how close it was to Montreal but, how close both cities were to the US border.
Killer Strike by Scott Arfield! He needs to be doing that for the national team! 1227692137753513988 is not a valid tweet id
