this info was taken from a newspaper article by marc webber in the Province Newspaper:

Pick 11 to protect (Player / Age / Salary)
    X Eric Hassli^ 30 $900,000
    Mustapha Jarju^ 25 $426,833
    X Jay DeMerit 31 $350,000
    Davide Chiumiento 26 $280,000
    X Joe Cannon 36 $209,756
    X John Thorrington 32 $207,200
    XAlain Rochat 28 $150,000
    X Camilo 23 $133,545
    Alexandre Morfaw 24 $90,000
    X Atiba Harris 26 $80,590
    X Gershon Koffie 20 $79,764
    Jay Nolly 29 $65,000
    X Jordan Harvey 27 $63,125
    Peter Vagenas 33 $48,000
    Greg Janicki 27 $45,000
    Shea Salinas 25 $44,000
    Jonny Leathers 25 $42,000
    Michael Boxall 23 $42,000
    X Jeb Brovsky 22 $42,000
    X Long Tan 23 $32,600
    Bilal Duckett 22 $32,600
    Carlyle Mitchell 24 $?

the X's are the players i would protect-- the caps still need an experienced goalie so i decided to keep cannon as he has had a solid year even if he is 36
until1 month ago, i would have never put brovsky and tan on my protection list, but their play has proven otherwise

    what are your choices??

Chiumiento has been, for me, one of the most frustrating players this year. Obvious talent, but low work rate, little toughness and heart. I can't see him lasting for the long haul in the physical play of the MLS, even with a coach who can motivate.

Peter Vagenas and Shea Salinas: where do I begin? Salinas: The Columbia Icefield flows faster than his decision-making with the ball, his creativity is about that of a stick-figure artist (given that his preferred/only tactic is to run at defenders in a line toward the corner flag before cutting in or crossing), and most of his crosses don't get past the opposing defender's outstretched leg. Vagenas just makes me angry. The fact that John Thorrington, after a year's worth of injury that should make him tentative, and with a cast on his wrist, tackles harder and more often than Vagenas, and makes more penetrating passes to boot, really says it all for me. But the icing on the cake is V's post-game interviews, where he lauds his own passing ability and waxes passive aggressively philosophical about the need for players to show dedication and professionalism. By rights, I'd lump TS in with these two, but I guess you can't leave the coach unprotected. We'll have to rely on PB not sticking with earlier comments, and letting TS go in the off-season.

The biggest surprise for me (pleasantly so) has been Long Tan. I agree that a couple months ago I never would have protected him. When I saw him play pre-season in Tukwila against the Sounders and Timbers, it looked as though his feet were made of stone and would never be capable of controlling a ball. Fast-forward to the last two games, and he seems to be a totally different player. The only thing that hasn't changed is his all-out effort. He also seems to be the center of about the only displays of camaraderie on the team these days. Seems like evryone on the bench is pulling for him. The Caps have too few players at the moment who bring out that kind of loyalty in their team-mates. But has he topped out? Will he be able to progress when his playing time allows other teams to scout him?

The reason I listed the guys I did is that the Caps can only lose 1 guy, so take the ones off that you don't anticipate Montreal would ever draft from us...you have to think more around the topic of leaving certain guys exposed in anticipation of who LImpact might not be interested in.

True. I guess I liked the list you posted because, looking down the full roster, there weren't any others (lack of experience/playing time this year) that I figured Montreal would want. And the ones I picked to protect are those I figured Montreal may select from (for their talent/experience) and because those are also the guys I think the Caps would miss if they left.

Not sure if I misunderstood the rules around this, I figured if a DP has a no trade clause they must be protected, would that not count as one of your 11?

as i understand it, a no-trade DP is outside the 11 protected players-- can any1 clarify this?

I understood that all automatically protected players (Gen adidas, NTC clause DP's etc) were all outside the 11.

This is a very common misunderstanding and actually got the Sounders in trouble in our first season. We assumed that since Ljunberg had a NTC he was automatically protected, but that is not true, so the Sounders had to do a last minute change to add Ljungberg to the protection list. Interestingly enough this is why Le Toux is in Philly as he was the player dropped to add Ljungberg.

As per usual, it is just a case of poor wording used by MLS when explaining how DPs are treated in previous expansion drafts. What they mean to say is that DPs can be left exposed unless they have a no trade clause. If they have a NTC, then they MUST be protected and it DOES count against the 11.

    http://pressbox.mlssoccer.com/content/2012-expansion-draft-rules

So, in the case of Hassli and Jarju, if they don't have NTCs, Vancouver can leave them exposed, but if they have NTCs, then Vancouver MUST use two of their 11 spots to protect them.

The only players that are exempt from the draft are Generation Adidas and home-grown players on the off-budget roster.

In that case, I'd protect Hassli as part of my 11, but not Jarju, and I'd drop Leathers from my original 11 protected list. I toyed with dropping Brovsky instead of Leathers, but I believe he has potential to develop in the middle of the park under another coach. I think he's poorly utilized at right back, and although he didn't impress in midfield early on, he showed some improvement there before being shifted to the back.

Montreal has signed a GK already so no need to protect Nolly or Cannon - regardless, both are replaceable even if they are snagged. I really am not sure if I'd protect Mitchell or Tan....???

Tan, Brovsky, Boxall, and Salinas all should be protected because their improved play, their young and their bargain salaries . Cannon, Thorrington and Chiumento are all replaceable retrospective to their play and salaries. Hassli and Jarju are not exempt from the protection list. However if Harris will be 100% in time for camp I wouldn't hesitate taking out Salinas and protect Harris.

Montreal signed their D2 keeper, so the equivalent of the Whitecaps signing Nolly. They are still in need of signing a starting GK, but most projections I've seen have LA leaving Ricketts or Saunders exposed, either of which would be an excellent pick by Montreal.

Chiumento has an excellent number of assists and is only as low (I think he could have more) as it is because he is played in the wrong spot!

I think Montreal would take Chiumiento if unprotected. Montreal has a lot of Italian immigrants so why not take a talented player who is of Italian descent and also speaks French. I think he would instantly be a fan favourite there.

can an expansion team really afford to have a player of his salary play for 35 minutes? he's not capable of putting out for a full 90 minutes game in- game out
Montreal-- pleassssse take him if he is available :D

Montreal is going to come in very ambitious and I think they'll be willing to take risks. The caps drafted Cannon (high salary, coming off broken ankle) and Thorrington(high salary with extensive history of injuries). Chiumiento has a high salary but his question marks aren't necessarily his health but his motivation. I think Montreal would take a risk with him if he was available.

I'm half thinking the Whitecaps will take a risk with him for at least the first part of next year too. They're paying him enough, and his upside is considerable. They may gamble that Rennie can light a fire under him. I could see Chiumiento being dealt to Montreal part way through the season, though. I'm not sure who else in MLS would take a chance on him.

That is, of course, if Rennie doesn't make up his mind about him sooner, like after training camp next week. Chiumiento couldn't have endeared himself with his comments after the final game, that he doesn't have anything to prove (Bruce Constantineau in the Van. Sun/Oct.23).

chiumiento's ego is much bigger than his talent for any serious professional team- he will end up in some marginal league in asia-- the Caps can do better than him-- i dont believe that some 'leopards can change their spots'- he is what he is- a 35 minute player who sometimes can add some dynamic stuff to a game- the Caps can ill-afford to have that type of player for 2012

If the Caps dump Chiumiento in 2012 I'll be very disappointed. He is a mercurial talent that can create and score goals. He's probably best served playing 35-45 minutes one game, a start the next, a sub the game after and keep his fitness levels high enough in that way, while maximizing his offensive capabilities and opportunities.

Barring the Caps signing some sort of outstanding CM or Jarju turning into that (rumour is he can do CM very well) full time and succeeding there is no way the Caps can afford to lose Chiumiento - if they were going to drop a player like that it'd have to be Salinas.

Otherwise we end up with a team of boring Thorrington's or mid-season Vagenas signings! YIKES!

If Pete Vagenas is still on the team after Rennie's training camp, I'll have serious reservations about him and the club. If V's still a Whitecap next season, I'lls eriously think of cancelling my season tickets.

I've never seen a bigger floater.
