Weary Reds seal victory with late flourish

One feature of Bayern's 2004-5 double-winning campaign was the ability to score crucial goals towards the end of matches, a quality largely attributable to the side's exceptional physical fitness. That trait was in evidence again on Saturday, as Felix Magath's men turned a game on its head in the closing stages – and this after just one week of pre-season training.

In their third summer warm-up, Bayern finally overcame a strong Würzburg city select XI 4-2, thanks to a powerful display over the last ten minutes. A 14,000 crowd at the Dallenberg stadium saw Hasan Salihamidzic (2), Owen Hargreaves and sub Claudio Pizarro find the target for the Munich giants, although three of the goals fell in the frantic closing stages.

"Right from the start, you could see we were tired after our efforts at the training camp," assistant coach Seppo Eichkorn observed, congratulating Saturday's opponents on an "excellent" opening 45 minutes.

A traffic problem had contributed to the visitors' less than ideal preparations for the match: the team bus was caught in a snarl-up due to a closed motorway and arrived heavily delayed in Würzburg, causing kick-off to be delayed by a good half-hour.

Eichkorn was nonetheless satisfied with his side's display. "It was a reasonable showing," he commented afterwards, taking encouragement from the storming finish as a good indicator of the positive work put in during the training camp in Rottach-Egern.

The squad was headed for Herzogenaurach, home town to long-serving equipment supplier adidas, before travelling on to the next friendly away to SV Grafenwöhr (kick-off 5 pm) on Sunday.

I heard karimi was good and had a couple of assists and good passes, glad he's fitting in. Salihamidzic is pretty good too, didn't know he was a decent goalscorer!

It's too early for ratings. They are in preseason-training.
