Although this is obviously about FIFA's official vote, wouldn't it be better to marge this with the thread we already had her on BigSoccer about Goal of the tournament?
Has to be carli lloyd's bomb. First goal was loud. 2nd goal was loud. 3rd goal a little less loud. 4th goal... after the long bomb 3/4 the Americans went nuts. The last 1/4 was like holy shit jaw dropped can't believe that happened looking at the goal keeper and feeling for her.
Just click on the picture and it loads a Youtube video. It's her third goal. I enjoy watching all the Puskas award nominees every year on the FIFA site. Still remember a few years ago when O'Reilly had her goal against I think Colombia nominated.
What I liked best about Loyd's goal was that she had the vision to spot the keeper off her line and then try the shot. You hardly see that in the women's game. Still, I much prefer well crafted team goals so I voted for Japan's goal against the Netherlands.
If that the case, then I prefer Wambach to Klingenberg to Lloyd to O'Hara against Germany. Very well-crafted, with a cool finish.
I think I'll go for DeVanna's goal against the U.S. It wasn't so much the quality of DeVanna's shot, but rather the beautiful buildup that gave her the opportunity for the shot. Plus it was an important goal that tied the game between US/Australia.
That's why is the best goal of the tournament...if it's not Lloyd's I'll go for Maren Mjelde incredible precise free-kick because it would have been impossible to save even for a men's goalie.
That's the one I voted for too, for the whole play leading up to the goal. Lloyd's goal was the best strike of the tournament, considering only the goal scorer.
A men's wall would almost certainly have blocked it. For me it's: 1) Lloyd's long-range goal vs Japan 2) Henry vs Mexico 3) Sakaguchi team goal vs Netherlands
That one still baffles me. Not that O'Reilly's goal wasn't great, but there were some other goals that were better. Yet that's the one that gets put up for the Puskas Award. Really, FIFA?
Not a surprise that Lloyd's goal won: http://www.fifa.com/womensworldcup/...al-of-the-tournament-to-her-haul-2663922.html The surprise for me is Montoya's goal taking second. I would have thought for sure that Sakaguchi's goal would have been second instead of third.
