This seems like the best place to put this. ESPN ranked the top 50 Premier League transfers. As expected, lots of Arsenal representation on this list. Of note, there aren't any Arsenal signings over the last 15+ years that made this list. Ah, for the good old days...
Hard to assess Ramsey since he was injured so often. When healthy, his impact was significant. Sagna is a good mention though. I thought Fabregas should be on that list, too, but since he was signed as an academy player, he may not have met the criteria.
Right Sol should be 1,2,3 with Henry, Vieria and Sol. We he have had big transfers since Ozil, Alexis, Lacazette, Aubameyang and now Pepe. Just no success with them on form of trophies outside of FA cups.
My beef with these lists is they never account properly for transfer inflation e.g according to the TPI model Carrick is one of the most expensive players SAF ever purchased and IIRC Rooney and Rio are two of the most expensive players in EPL history as is Drogba - so the Rooney deal is significantly better than the Drogba one. Presumably KDB is ranked so low because he was so expensive in today's money, but that was also in a period of significant inflation. IMO there is not much reason to think he is a worse deal than Vieira given he is the best 8 of his generation Similarly Henry was not cheap in adjusted money but also not in the 50 highest adjusted prices https://tomkinstimes.com/transfer-price-index-top-100-premier-league-buys-after-inflation/
Carrick was worth every penny. He showed up and they started winning. When he finished they stopped winning.
Here's a video NBC put out... a collection of hatricks and more from the history of the Prem. Nice to see that Dennis's 3 at Filbert Street, and Andre's 4 at Anfield made the cut. Warning, watching this may make you miss the EPL even more. https://soccer.nbcsports.com/2020/0...002&mi_u=29B0FEAF-1D1D-4A15-8EBC-00D3149FCFBD
I think it was 18m - but that was a lot of money at the time compared to the average transfer (only Chelsea were routinely spending insane amounts). e.g. at that time 17m for Reyes was Arsenal's record signing. I still find this model quite fascinating. Carrick cost about the same as Ozil in adjusted money - with Ozil costing 80m+ in 2017 money, which is an indication of how much the TV money inflated the domestic market. This makes some kind of sense with quality middies now costing 50m (Bruno) but genuine stars like De Bruyne or peak Ozil would cost way more than that https://tomkinstimes.com/2017/07/sh...t-more-plus-top-100-signings-after-inflation/
Yeah I just watched this one. Couldn't really remember whether this was the 4-4 or one of the 5-2's but alas it was that late winner by Kaboul... who remembers him?! Chamakh was our leading scorer at that time???? And this their first and only win at the Grove... at least until Emery came. And just because I was in the mood for more heartbreak, I then watched TUDN's re-airing of the '06 UCL Final. Haven't had the guts to rewatch that in years. Man we were so close. Forgetting about the results it was really nice to watch some of my old favorite players like Sol, Kolo, Sagna, Freddie, Tomas, ...
Damn, it's like old home week around here! Or old homeat. A tiny little silver lining to Covid-19? Alumni are always welcome back... to visit... or stay.
Exactly what I meant. Or maybe Eboue tracks his runner. But the fact that we held the lead with 10 men for 70 minutes... then they score 2 goals in 5' right at the end... brutal.
Honestly I felt we would lose when he missed that because he and everyone else looked so gassed. They ran us ragged.
I wonder if Spurs will put out a DVD of this year celebrating the things they might have won if all the games hadn't been cancelled.
NBC Sports keeps running goal compilations from past seasons. Dear God, 2008 looks like it was generations ago.
