+1 They can probably get a conviction easily without a confession here. They have security video of the two entering the room around 6 in the morning (I think). You have him leaving the room and coming back. You have her dead by 8:30. You have VS attempting to leave the country? (I think that is right, but honestly, I'm not following details that closely). Unless the same security camera captures someone going into the room while he was out, then there is simply no one else. The fact that all of the known facts line up perfectly with his confession is gravy. One interesting detail in this. I read that, if convicted, there is a maximum 35 year sentence for murder there. That seems crazy to me. A kid his age could presumably get the harshest sentence, serve the whole thing and still be relatively young (late middle age) when he gets out.
We're used to life sentences for 3 strikes - shoplifting, stealing a car & burglary for instance. Not that this kid doesn't deserve to be dropped in a hole with pit vipers and alligators, but for various reasons (probably cost) other countries don't incarcerate the massive amount of people that we do.

Here a US-style life sentence would be unconstitutional. Life sentence exists as the maximum penalty, but most convicted are paroled after +/- 20 years.
