Heading to Iceland in May and it appears we will be there during a game. Has anyone gone that can point me in the right direction to pick up tickets and such? I did a little googling and it is not quite as obvious as I had hoped (at least to my north America centric perspective). rod.
We had a local buddy get us tickets. All of the Icelandic clubs are pretty small, so tickets are usually easy to get unless it a big match. Just ask a local. Everyone there is very friendly and basically everybody speaks English. You could also just swing by the ground the day before, or the day of, the match to buy a ticket. Reykjavik is a small city, so its pretty easy to get around. Valur's ground isn't even a 5-min drive from downtown.
Great, I checked this thread out just for giggles and now there's another jersey I have to find.... Fara Valur! (per Google Translate)
I haven't been able to find a scarf or a jersey online (trying to convince the wife to take me to Reykjavik to get one), but I did find this: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/fcshirtsunited/valur-A9282045
Valur opens the season with a stoppage time win, 2-1 over KR, goals from Acoff (US) and Thomsen (Denmark). Second place in the table on goal difference.
Valur played Vikingur to a 0-0 draw in a scrappy affair which included 8 YCs, 5 of which went to Valur. No Thors (or Thanos' for that matter) were involved in the uneventful affair.
Valur played Fylkir yesterday to a 2-2 draw in a typical Rapids style game. Up 2-0 in the 75th minute, a late collapse left them with 2 fewer points than they should have had. Valur now in 3rd place with 5 points in 3 games.
Wonder if we could get Valur in for a friendly....let both teams collapse in the last 15 mins and see what happens???
Valur finished yet another 2-2 draw today against Stjarnan. The tale was turned this time when Valur scored to draw level in the 78th minute. Not only was there a Thor sighting with Alex Thor Hauksson starting for Stjarnan, but there was also a Baldur sighting when Baldur Sigurdsson received a yellow in the 45th minute, and again when he scored in the 64th minute to put Stjarnan ahead 2-1. Valur is now in 5th place with 6 points and a +1 GD.
Fun Fact of the Day: Valur defender Birkir Sævarsson is the starting RB for Iceland in the World Cup. He played a full 90 against Argentina.
OK I will be in Iceland in early September... Any general "my favorite part of the trip" please send to me riccardo55@mac.com R
We had a blast, but tend to drink more than most. Soaking pools were very relaxing. Valur stadium isn't too far out of town of they are playing.
Champions League Football tomorrow (2pm our time, I think) https://www.valur.is/frett/18456/20...midvikudaginn-11-juli-tryggdu-ther-mida!.aspx Can probably watch it on reddit/soccerstreams - just after England beats Croatia....
Valur got screwed in Champions League qualifying. 3 different hand ball PKs (2 against, 1 for) and a send off that shouldn't have happened.
Not yet in CL play. Here's the Referee forum thread about the game: https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/ucl-rosenborg-vs-valor.2085239
Looks like I am going to be in Iceland in early August. Last time I was there the games were not going, but it appears maybe there is one in town while I am there. Not sure if I can break away from work. If I can get away without anyone noticing, going to try and get to a game. Anyone that has gone - how hard is it to get there, navigate with English as my only language, etc.??
Rod, we visited in May. I had no issues at all speaking only English. Most top flight teams are within or an easy drive from Reykjavik. Besides top-flight games, look at the second tier as well. The top flight played on weekends but the second tier played on week days ... it will give you more options.
So Rod, we went in early September pre-Covid and loved it. We chose then as the light/dark cycle wasn't too crazy. Everyone is English fluent, and like most of Western Europe they like to practice their English. You can do a lot from Reykjavik on day trips. The Glacier lagoon on the southeast side (best to do an overnight) was wonderful when we hit it on a sunny day.
The Golden Circle is worth the hype, especially the Gulfoss. The Snæfellsnes peninsula was outstanding as well. The drive the blacksand beaches in Vik is awesome as well ... you'll see some amazing waterfalls along the way. This was a bucket list trip for us and we loved every minute of it.
Thanks, all! I have been to iceland in the past, but there weren't any games going. It was around world cup qualification last cycle, so everyone was very excited. Looking forward to *hopefully * seeing a game, work dependent.
