Yes, he said that “19 or 20” are basically filled.

Obviously that doesn’t meant that things can’t change.

I don't think Pepi OR LDLT are "locks"....Berhalter has said that he'll go with whomever is hot at striker, and LDLT plays a position that we already have tremendous depth at when everyone is healthy.

My best guess would be (locks for the final 23 in bold):

Keepers (3): Steffen, Turner, Horvath, Johnson

Center Backs (4): Zimmerman, Richards, Long, Brooks, CCV

Right/Left Backs (4): Dest, Antonee Robinson, Yedlin, Scally, Cannon, Bello

Defensive Midfielders (3-4): Adams, Acosta, McKennie, Roldan

Attacking Midfielders/Wingers (6-8): Pulisic, Reyna, Weah, Aaronson, Musah, Morris, Arriola, De La Torre, Busio

Strikers (2-4): Ferreria, Pepi, Pefok, Ferreria, Dike, Sargent, Wright

So 19 locks, and 16 players battling for the last 4 spots:

    20: Backup keeper
    21: Fourth center back
    22: Fourth fullback
    23: Second striker

Obviously, I'm assuming a 23-man roster, not the rumored 26.....

Why would you have Roldan and Morris as locked when they hardly play?
I don't think Ferreira is a lock, in fact, he lost points this last game.

Because I think that the reason that Roldan/Morris haven't been playing is that Berhalter has already decided to take them and therefore feels that he doesn't need to see them play. So with a limited number of matches left, he's giving playing time to the guys he's undecided about.

Ferreira hasn't been finishing, but he fits Berhalter's style the best of all the current striker candidates, and has been in the right place at the right time enough to at least get chances (which can't really be said of his competition). So while I agree that no striker is a "100% lock", Ferreira is in the lead right now.

It appears as though Arriola has displaced both Roldan and Morris.

    Very possible.

Morris hasn’t looked the same since his injury, but the guy can score goals and he has that over Arriola, even though Arriola is playing much better right now

The advantage that Morris has over Arriola is the fact that Morris can play the #9 (which he's frequently done for the Sounders when Ruidiaz has been unavailable).

Whereas Arriola is simply a small winger. And that's a position where the US already has plenty of depth.

As wingers, Arriola & Morris are probably 4th/5th on the depth chart at best.....but Morris could conceivably be 2nd/3rd on the depth chart as a #9 given how poorly the other options have all played.

If there are 26 in Qatar, I think that Jordan Morris and Arriola both will be there.

There's a few farewells I'd add to the list (Birnbaum, Bradley as two examples) since they did get caps with the US and are still playing professionally. But this is a great list, some of these names had buzz years ago but I had completely forgotten about.

    Thank you to you both....

Of note, I know that there are always a few exceptions and a few that I miss, but as a general rule, unless they’re still in the international picture (such as Tim Ream who is still on the periphery if he’s starting for Fulham) I typically drop players off the list once they’re over the 30 hump for the next cycle (which makes me feel old because I’ll be over 40 next cycle ).

Also, I always appreciate feedback when I miss a player, or miss something about them (ie their club, etc). It’s often easy to overlook some players and details.

An early look at the immediate USMNT pool for 2026....

    Key:
    Starter -
already established that they’re the trustworthy, go-to “starter” for their position.
Locked In - already established and “locked in” to be an important figure for the 2026 cycle.
Get Ready - Not established in the 2022 cycle (even if already capped), but should “Get Ready” to be a factor in the 2026 cycle.
MLS / YA Contender - Not expected to be part of the main group yet, but should expect to be a “Contender” for one of the depth guys and the occasional camp. My preferred way to label a fringe guy or player on the bubble.
Over the Hill - Established players in 2022 who are expected to be “Over the Hill” by 2026. For field players, I typically define that as age 32. For goalkeepers, I typically define that as age 36. Of course, that’s not an absolute for everyone.
Prospects - Youth “Prospects” who are at least eligible for the Olympics who will probably have to wait until after that stage to fight for a spot for the senior team.
Dual-Nationals - Considering “Dual-Nationals” who do not appear to be in the US camp, but who we might want to persuade to join our ranks.
Honorable Mention - Players who deserve an “Honorable Mention” but who I don’t expect to receive a call up.

For reference, I count 7 established starters for next cycle and 25 locked in / get ready players for this upcoming cycle.

In comparison, if my memory is true to me, I believe I would have probably said, at the end of the 2018 cycle, we had one established starter (Pulisic), and maybe 6 locked in / get ready players (Jedi, Arriola, Morris, McKennie, Brooks, Yedlin).

It’ll definitely be a different cycle.

are u trying to make us sad about 26 already

there better be way more turnover from the team then that. if its just 3 and half years of this team with a few fringe players added in there isn't much to hope for.

There will be a big chunk of turnover for 2026, I'd expect. It won't be the level of debuts we've seen, but we're going to see some of our guys decline, others improve, and the overall talent level keeps rising. Unfortunately, not all the turnover will be good.

I see Zman phasing out. Same for Arriola, Acosta, Morris, Yedlin, Johnson. Cannon for being young. I think he will also lose his place in the pecking order.

I think it is more. I am willing to bet at least one core player today be one in 2026. And I expect some surprises at different ages. Maybe by then a long forgotten Bryan Reynolds is a player. Or the next Zimmerman emerges.

those guys you list are basically fringe guys for the most part

johnson has the third spot locked up because greg can't take three euro keepers thats not really a spot I see as turnover.

Arriola is the last winger probably, morris and cannon aren't likely to make the wc at this point.

Most of the players I mentioned are subbies.
I think their replacement will be either from the U19/U20 or new finds from abroad.

if greg still wants to push his formation and style of play in the next cycle he can't do it built on this group thats been proven. you can't have adams/mckennie out there trying to play a possession/play from the back style.

my point is just that changing the third option at positions(especially gk) isn't going to change this teams performance.

Regarding the player pool, how much faith do you put in our players in where you think their readiness to be a competitor at the World Cup?

0-20% = Little to No faith
20-40% = More likely to be a liability than an asset
40-60% = could go either way
60-80% = More likely to be an asset than liability
    80-100% = A lot to absolute faith

    Goalkeepers:
    • Matt Turner: 70% If he could play out of the back and he was playing regularly, he would be over 80.
    • Sean Johnson: 50% I get that he’s less likely to make the roster than Steffen and Horvath, but I also believe he’s less error prone than both.
    • Zack Steffen: 45%. I know he’ll be there but personally I don’t trust him not to screw things up.
    • Ethan Horvath: 40%. I trust him still less than Steffen.
    • Gabriel Slonina: 35%. He’s the future, but he’s one for the next cycle.
    • Josh Cohen: 20%. He deserves a call up after the World Cup.

    Fullbacks:
    • Jedi Robinson: 90% He’s irreplaceable. Just don’t get caught trying to do too much.
    • Sergino Dest: 80%. He loses 10 points for becoming a bench/rotational player for his club and that we all identify he still has to work on defense.
    • DeAndre Yedlin: 65% Yedlin’s experience gives him the boost. He won’t be a game changer but I expect him to lock down his side.
    • Joe Scally: 60%. He would be higher if he had more international experience.
    • Sam Vines: 50%. I trust him to not be a major liability but I don’t know how much I trust him to help either.
    • Reggie Cannon: 50% Cannon’s injury knocked off 10 points.
    • John Tolkin: 25%. Now isn’t the time to throw him into the fire.
    • Shaq Moore: 20%. I’d be worried that we would find out that CONCACAF is his ceiling.
    • George Bello: 10%. He’s got to sort out his club situation.

    Center Backs:
    • Walker Zimmerman: 80% The only center back that we should trust but this is still a big step up for him.
    • Chris Richards: 50% Just returning from injury hurts him. He would probably be at 65% otherwise. (Miles was at 80%)
    • Tim Ream: 50% If he wasn’t so slow he’d be higher.
    • Cameron Carter-Vickers: 35% He needed to not get hurt at that last window and he still hasn’t proven reliable at the international stage.
    • John Brooks: 30% I still trust him more than the others. But Berhalter clearly doesn’t.
    • Matt Miazga: 30% He gets a bump for recent MLS form but he’s still an outsider.
    • Mark McKenzie: 30% He’s still a turnover machine which makes me not trust him.
    • Aaron Long: 25% Terrible September window and poor MLS run has me having barely any faith in him.
    • Auston Trusty: 20% He’s ready yet.
    • James Sands: 20% Being moved to Rangers bench hurts him.
    • Erik Palmer-Brown: 20% Being moved to Troyes bench hurts him.
    Midfielders:
    • Tyler Adams - 99%. The man who should he captain. He’s consistently the most reliable player that we have in our player pool.
    • Yunus Musah - 90%. He’s still so young so I won’t rate him higher. But he should be able to hold his own.
    • Weston McKennie - 80% What McKennie will show up? Because of his history of inconsistency, and noting that he was terrible in the September window, I can’t rate him higher.
    • Kelyn Acosta - 55%. I believe if used as an emergency 6, he will hold his own. I think at the 8, he’ll get lost at the big stage.
    • Luca de la Torre - 50%. I’m worried because he isn’t playing for Celta and because he was bossed out of the Japan game. He lost 10-15% just for that game.
    • Malik Tillman - 30%. Who knows with Tillman. You see the talent but you also see the inconsistency.
    • Cristian Roldan - 30%. We know what we’ll get with Roldan, and we know it won’t be absolutely terrible but it won’t be good either.
    • Djordje Mihailovic - 25%. The fact that he’s not been part of the team keeps his rating lower than Roldan and Tillman.
    • Eryk Williamson - 15%. He hasn’t returned fully to the Gold Cup form which showed a lot of promise.
    • Richie Ledezma - 15%. The fact that he’s hardly playing for PSV and hasn’t been back with the team keeps him this low.
    • Johnny Cardoso - 15%. He’s one for the future but he didn’t show anything in September which almost kills his chance.
    • Gianluca Busio - 10%. I don’t know what’s going on at Venezia, but he needs to try to leave this winter. Even if it is to return to MLS.
    Wingers:
    • Brenden Aaronson - 90%. You know you’re going to get effort from Aaronson. That has him at the highest rated winger.
    • Christian Pulisic - 80%. What Pulisic will show up? We all know he’s the most talented. But we also know that he disappears. I don’t trust him to be a leader. But again, he’s got the skill.
    • Tim Weah - 80%. If he can stay healthy, we know what we’re going to get from him. Effort.
    • Gio Reyna - 60% Can he finish a game? He’s got the talent. But can he bring it?
    • Paul Arriola - 40% I don’t expect him to be a game changer. But I could see him being an asset in killing a game off.
    • Jordan Morris - 35% My faith in him is dropping by the minute.
    • Kevin Paredes - 20% Now isn’t the time to throw him into the fire.
    Forwards:
    • Jesus Ferreira - 40%. He hasn’t shown a lot, but he’s shown more than the rest. That gives him the generous 5 point boost.
    • Ricardo Pepi - 35%. I like his work rate. I like his potential. I like that he’s in form. But let’s not ignore that he goes missing when we need him.
    • Jordan Pefok - 35%. Maybe higher? Maybe lower? I don’t know Berhalter won’t play him.
    • Brandon Vazquez - 35%. He has the advantage of being the shiny, new object which helps at this position. And he’s still in form. But you’re going to just play him for the first time at a World Cup?
    • Josh Sargent - 35%. I considered rating him lower because he has consistently been missing in a USMNT uniform. But his current form and Berhalter’s faith in him keeps tied with the rest.
    • Haji Wright - 25%. If he keeps scoring, he’ll stay on the radar. But he hasn’t done anything to lock down the CF position for us either.
