We've got a few other Americans in the first qualifying round. Josh Gatt at Dundalk, Harry Wingo at Molde. Molde's good enough that they have a shot at the group stage. Let's also remember our American coach at RB Salzburg. Jesse Marsch
Adams start on the bench. Looking to become the 2nd USMNTer American to play in a Champions League semifinal (after Beasley at PSV). Well Adams did get on in the semi but wasn't worth much. PSG just controlled the game start to finish. RB needs to find some replacement for Werner. They clearly are missing him.
Probably no appropriate thread for this bit of trivia, but I believe this is the first Champions League final to feature two CONCACAF internationals on the field at the same time: Alphonso Davies (Canada) and Keylor Navas (Costa Rica). Yorke, Marquez, Chicharito, and Navas have all started Champions League finals before, but I believe each one was the only CONCACAF representative on the field that day.
U.S. U-20 winger Cameron Harper on the bench for Celtic for its Champions League qualifier against Hungary's Ferencvaros. Game just underway— Brian Sciaretta (@BrianSciaretta) August 26, 2020
I am still trying to get over having de la Fuente on the bench for Barcelona Against Bayern Munich. This generation is a whole other level. Somehow starting for Fulham isnt the benchmark anymore
Celtic lost 2-1 hosting Ferencvaros. The round was just one game. Molde will be unseeded in tomorrow's draw for Champions League Qualifying Round 3. They will face Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia, Young Boys of Switzerland, Red Star Belgrade/Crvena Zvezda of Serbia, Qarabag of Azerbaijan, or Maccabi Tel Aviv of Israel. Those games will be on September 15 and 16 after national teams play this week and next week.

That was the original post in this thread on March 30, 2018. The 1000 posts was dumb, people like to post too much haha. But we had zero in either league (I think maybe one had been knocked out, maybe two, probably Johnson and Pulisic or maybe Horvath). Not counting back-up GKs, we have five in the Champions League, with possibly another getting in there. Not sure if the Europa League is settled, but I think we will have at least three in there.

Berhalter is a big believer in the importance of this thread: I will go as far as to say that a mark of any country's potential success is directly related to the amount of players they have competing in the Champions League," Berhalter said. "In those games you either sink or you swim. The game is the great revealer. When you have a guy who can go in there, on that stage, and play and hang in there, they ought to be able to do the same thing in the World Cup, because they are similar types of games." https://www.espn.com/soccer/united-...ill-it-translate-to-world-cup-success-in-2022
Maybe for the first time in our history, all of American soccer seems on board with this. The USMNT coach is saying it out loud and the MLS commish is not calling a news conference to demand an apology. That is because MLS is busy selling players and hyping up their former Academy products in the Champions League. USSF wants their players there and MLS wants to sell their players there. We are aligned. I think Gregg and Earnie wanted it all along but feel free to say it out loud now. MLS kind of knew it, but the publicity they got with Davies and Adams in the Champions League this Summer has them wanting more.

Finally the COVID does something right. Recap: Horvath, Pulisic and Dest started. Reyna came off the bench (assist) as did Adams. Mckennie probably would have played but the COVID no good there. Looks like no one really greatly distinguished themselves nor hurt themselves, which basically means this was probably, on the whole, the most successful single day in European competition for Americans ever.
Apparently Horvath did well. Not at fault for Zenit's goal as it was a fluky own-goal. He was the one that really needed to step up as he's in the "shop window." Of course we broke a record by having 5 Americans suit up on a Champions League group stage match day. We've had four before. Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Oguchi Onyewu (Malaga), and Michael Parkhurst (Nordsjaelland) in 2012-2013. Gooch played very few games for Malaga. One was a 1-0 victory over AC Milan in the Champions League that year. There's a difference in the quality of club and age of the players of course.
