I came across this site and thought it rather interesting, especially since it had National Team-related content. http://www.longbets.org/bet/8 The bet: "The US men's soccer team will win the World Cup before the Red Sox win the World Series." Hopefully some of us are still alive when one of the two happen, whichever one ends up winning.
Will Larry Barnett ref a World Cup game? I've seen that web site and I'm not too impressed. Why? Because the money goes to charity making the bets less than serious. We would see much more interesting bets if there was a profit motive. This one is a great example. The Red Sox are at least 10 times more likely to win a WS before the USA wins a WC.
I think part of the problem is the inherent advantage for the Red Sox. They get a shot at the Series every year. The Nats not only have to wait 4 years between tries, they need to qualify to even get the chance to win. If it were reversed, would a World Cup win become more likely?
Regardless how many shots the Choke Sox have, the problem is mental, thus, they'll feel the feeling of dejection by being eliminated in the playoffs/WS by a factor of 4.
The problem is not mental. The Red Sox' only curse has been inept management and ownership. The U.S., on the other hand, suffers from a talent deficiency.
what about the bigger picture Who cares about the bet! The only thing I care about is if Nomar Garciaparra and Mia Hamm are serious. I know they are dating right now……..think of the possible outcome 20years from now…. Adu off to Garciaparra, who…..you guys keep a close eye on this!
This is exactly why we can't let Ricketts get away - the Sox traded the Babe and the rest, as they say, is history. We'll get the curse of Michael Ricketts.
Until Ricketts is to soccer what Babe was to baseball that's one of the dumbest things I ahve ever heard
there is no curse. the red sox used to be run by a bunch of idiots. this is a team that turned down the opportunity to sign willie mays because they didn't want any black players. forget the fact that they have obnoxious fans who even alienated their greatest ever to play he game, Teddy Ballgame. forget the fact that the Yawkey's who owned the team for decades were clods. even the selling of the babe is proof of bad management... selling your best player to get money to finance a broadway play? look at where they play... fenway is a great park to visit, but how are they supposed to attract the modern-day-I-want-everything-on-a-silver-platter athlete... locker rooms that flood and overflowing toilets, not to mention the annoying press, negative fans, and historically overbearing ownership are enough to chase away many players. the red sox got to be losers the old fashioned way, they earned it.
The Red Sox are NOT LOSERS. If they were, then there would be no discussion of the Ruth curse. In fact, they are winners that have been terribly unlucky to not have won a WS. Good players will play for the Red Sox. The Yankees were pretty racist as well historically. Giving up Fenway for a World Series is a bad trade.
sorry to join this so late, but I don't ever think the Red Sux will win a world series. They have never been able to master the Yankees, and so will never win the east and then they have to go against all the talent in the west, with oakland and anaheim and seattle for the wild card. Never gonna happen, they will never even get close much less make it to the playoffs. So I would place my money on the nat'l team. AT least they have talent and have shown the world that they can win when they need to. Just my .02
