I'm a big fan of daniel fernandes. He is playing well overseas and is a huge mofo. Scolari should book a flight to greece.

Daniel carrico, the next best thing, and of course -- bred from Sporting's finest.

Here's a good read I found posted by another member of XT.

Tomorrow's stars: portrait of the hopes of the "Big 3"

by Pedro Calhau and Vítor Hugo Alvarenga
    Translated from MaisFutebol
    28.02.2008

At 19 years of age, the the academy time is over and adulthood comes in football. Some reach the top floor at an even younger age, but most of the promises start becoming confirmed at the U18 and U19 levels. It is a rule always open to exceptions and there are still several players that already passed to the following level precociously, appearing in the first squads or being loaned to clubs of other ranks.

Here we let the exceptions follow their path (e.g. Stélvio Cruz, Miguel Vítor, Rabiola or Adrien Silva) and we try to find out who are those that are still giving the first steps towards that direction. MaisFutebol introduces you to the stars of tomorrow.

Portugal is a country where football turns around the three big clubs and, also at the youth levels, Sporting, FC Porto and Benfica dominate. Several are the players of the "Big 3" that have been part of the regular choices of the Portuguese youth level National Teams. The first scouting period for those with a chance of becoming capped start with the U15 Lopes da Silva Tournament and it is from the U16 NT that the future set of internationals begins to take shape.

    Sporting's strength in the midfield

The experience of a NT player does not manage to be have enough competitive rhythm under the lead of the NT coaches thus side by side with the short and few NT concentrations, most part of the competition is done at club level leagues.

The status of international starting at 16 is in fact only consolidated at the U19 level and, on a year of European Championships (of which its Qualifying Elite Round is going to be played by the Portuguese NT in May), besides the four players already mentioned, there are others that deserve our attention.

In Alvalade, there are three players that are already at that level. And, as it is custom at Sporting, the midfield is their strongest point. André Santos and Marco Matias are the perfect examples. Nuclear players at the U19 of the Lions, they have also conquered their place at the Portuguese U19, as they have shown it at the qualification round to the Elite Tournament.

The forward Wilson Eduardo is the exception amongst the Sportinguistas. Through collecting goals from an early age (14) at the NT, the player that previously played for FC Porto is at the U19 with almost 30 caps.

Promises of Carvalhas and one more FC Porto-style full back

The Benfica player André Carvalhas also appears as an unavoidable reference at the youth levels of our NT. He plays in the midfield, but likes to score goals. For Portugal he scored 10 and for Benfica, only this season, he already signed 15, being the most influential player of the Reds and having already been called to train with the first squad.

From FC Porto, arrives the defensive consistency. André Pinto and Valter Fernandes are two defenders that leave the current U19 champions as one of the teams that conceeds less (only one more goal conceeded than the top 2 clubs).

André Pinto is very much appreciated at his club and received recently the Golden Dragon for the Best Young Athlete of the Year. The versatile Valter Fernandes is also a regular presence in the NTs, in spite of his loan to Candal.

With less protagonism, but already with some experience, the Portista defender Tengarrinha still has lots of time to recover the initial hopes. Miguel Rosa is also starting to appear at Benfica as well as David Simão (both midfielders), the latter with 18. With the same age, Sporting's midfielder Diogo Rosado is already doing enough at Alvalade to be taken into account by the U19 NT; as well as the Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes.

When I go to Portugal this summer. I'm going to their academy, and I'm going to threaten every winger in there to become a striker or face dire consequences. This is rediculous.
