I've been putting together an Excel spreadsheet (an ultimate geek exercise, I know) of every soccer game I've attended - United, US, Open Cup, Friendlies, Liverpool, home, away, etc. Through the DCU and MLS websites I have gotten the scores of all the games but I'm missing the scorers of a few games in 2000 because of either missing links or, in the case of the United website, the table is only half completed.

Does anybody know the United scorers (I'm not interested in the opposition) for the following games:

    7/1/00 - Colorado: 1 goal
7/22/00 - Newcastle: 3 goals (Etch had two, right?)
    7/26/00 - Rochester (USOC): 3 goals
    8/9/00 - Miami (USOC): 2 goals
    9/3/00 - New England: 2 goals

If anybody can pass that information on to me I would be greatly appreciative.

Thanks. I was pretty sure Marino had a two-goal game, but didn't know which one it was.

And I guess on the Newcastle game both Etch and Convey had two assists, right?

Just from memory I thought Marco assisted on all 3 DC goals in that game, but I have no way to back that up.

It was tough to handle after the success of the first four years but I remember a lot of exciting games that unfortunately ended in a loss.

Did you get all the assists, Dave? I have the box scores of each game if you're interested.

Some things I noted when I looked them up that were interesting:

Convey's first MLS point with the assist on Arce's goal. Limpar and Marco exchanged jerseys after the tie as well.

Etch had 3 assists, Convey 2, and Moreno and Albright had 1 each. MLS scoring, but I'd have to agree with them on those plays. Llamosa's only goal with United I believe as well. In the opponent's net anyway.

Etch had 3 assists again, Moreno and Arce one each.

United's lowest announced attendance ever - 3,864. Nicky had horrible dyed blond hair. Pope had an OG, No assists in the game, but it was Marco's CK that Jaime ultimately knocked in, and Ray's quote was classic "I'm thrilled and abslutely elated to beat a team, that to me, no matter what anybody says, has the best 11 players in MLS. (Little did he know he's inherit that trainwreck little more than a year later!)

Agoos and Wood assisted Marino's miraculous goal fest after the US beat Guatemala in frnt of 51,996 announced attedance at RFK. Whinealda got a goal called back that was clearly onside as well that was pretty satisfying.

Anyway, had fun looking this up. Can't believe you actually needed help on a United history question though. And I mean that in a good way!

That goal by Llamosa against Newcastle wasn't his only goal for United, he also scored the season opening goal in '99! Which made me think about Pope's season opening goal against Meola and NJ in '97 (That backheel was sweet!!).

Did you know, other than Arce who scored our first three goals in '96's disastrous beginning, defenders have scored in 5 of United's 7 other opening games of each MLS season?

Pope in '97, Richie in '98, Llamosa in '99, Agoos in '00 (although he scored the second goal of the season, Moreno scored the first goal earlier in the game).

Then it was Convey in '01, Curtis in '02......And finally Petke this year!

Now considering we went to MLS Cups in 3 of the four years a defender has scored in an opening game, I'd say a trip to the final this year is statistically a virtual lock! See you in LA!!!

Sad to see how statistics can be so cruelly twisted isn't it? Then again, who else is on thee bandwagon? I love to find little trends like this!

(Lord, I hope I don't have some sort sort of mania!)

I'm not tracking assists here. That would be a bit more than the spreadsheet was set out to do, but thanks.

And RDA returned the favor next April by assisting on Bobby's first goal...

I've got 3,186 listed for the Rochester USOC game on July 26.

While we're on the subject of attendance, do you know the numbers for the 7/24/01 USOC game against Hershey in Richmond and the Unity Games match at RFK?

I generally research before I post to double-check. Once I've taken the time to write it out, I tend to remember it.

He also scored in the 5-2 victory in Colorado (hat trick for Jaime) and a 3-2 victory against Dallas (RDA's return and Albright's first goal), when Richard Farrer, I think, scored a late own goal.

Williams scored our first goal in 98 against the Fusion. Since it was the first game played overall in MLS, I remember somebody at the bar saying "Richie Williams is currently leading the league in scoring."

Great free kick right in front of those of us who had made the trip up, as was watching Lothar take down Jaime in the box on his debut.

Why, you might call it a Unitedmania...
