Luis Suarez had a hat trick this weekend to take his league goal total to 32. Despite the impressive total, he is still 11 goals shy of the all time record with 3 games to go. It seems like the Eredivisie scoring record will stand forever. What are some other records that have stood for a long time?

The other example I can think of is the MLS scoring record, although I think it will be broken eventually. As in the Eredivisie, the record was set in the inaugural season (1996) by Roy Lassiter with 27 goals. Two players have scored 26 and Edson Buddle is currently on track to break the record with 5 goals in 3 games, but even as a Galaxy supporter, I doubt Buddle will be able to do it.

Someone winning 3 (or more) World Cups as a player seems really unlikely to me.

The single-season goalscoring record in first-division professional United States soccer is 67, set by Archie Stark of Bethlehem Steel in the 1924-25 American Soccer League season. That doesn't seem likely to be broken any time soon.

    That was a 44-game season.

The English top division scoring record of 60 held by Dixie Dean in 1927-28 season. The last time someone got over 40 was 50 years ago (Jimmy Greaves 41 1960-61).

Though there were more games then, Dixie dean did it in 39; only one more game than a complete Prem season these days. The main thing was that the offside rule changed in 1924 and it took defenders a few years to adjust.

The change in the offside rule was in 1925. Archie Stark's record was set in the last season before the change.

Gerd Müller's Bundesliga goal scoring records are unlikely to be broken anytime soon.

Goals per season - 40 (no player since the 1970s has even gotten 30)
Career goals - 365 (no player who started his career after the 1960s managed to get even half that number so far - Kirsten was just one short, though, with 182 career goals)
Total number of season top scorer titles - 7 (second best all-time is 3)

I wonder whether in nearly every country the single-season goalscoring record was set years ago and is unlikely to be approached again.

Telmo Zarra and Hugo Sanchez' record of 38 goals in La Liga won't be broken in a while. The closest since was Ronaldo with 34 in 96/97. It took 13 more seasons for somebody to break 30 (Forlan last season).

109; most international goals scored (official matches) by Ali Daei of Iran (man in my user name)

2nd was the great PUSKAS of hungary with 86 goals i believe
3rd was Pele with 77 goals
current active players like Klose, Berbatov, Eto'o, Drogba are in 40s and 50s

this record will probably never be broken

    OK in brief,

    1- Pele's 3 WC winner (Ronaldo was closed with 98final + 94 on bench)
    2- Pele's 58goals topscorer Brazil league 1959
    3- Pele's 11 x Paulista Topscorers
    4- Just Fontaine's 13goals /WC
    5- Muller's 40goals / Bundesliga
    6- Zarra = Sanchez's 38goals/Liga
    7- Ronaldo's youngest WPOY (at 20)
    8- Beckenabauer's 11xconsecutive TOP10 Ballon Dor
    9- Dixie Dean's 60goals /England league
    10-Héctor Horace Scotta's 60goals Argentina league

There are probably more but the above 10 were more or less notably outstanding

*Germany has made the quarterfinals or better of 15 consecutive World Cups (actually, this one could be broken by Germany in 2014).

This might not be a record, but I don't think we will see another Steve Bull again. He never played in the top flight while earning 13 caps for England. It could happen again if the player is not from a soccer elite country. Certainly, it won't happen to a player from one of the Big Four.

Lots of records (as far as stability) for the Germans. Longest standing coach in history (I think,) Sepp Herberger, and having used only 5 coaches in 62 years.

    Sepp Herberger 1936 - 1964
    Helmut Schön 1964 - 1978
    Jupp Derwall 1978 - 1984
    Franz Beckenbauer 1984 - 1990
    Berti Vogts 1990 - 1998

Since the beginning of the WC history till now, only once happened that an Olimpic goal was achieved, during a game. It happened in 1962, in the city of Arica, during that year`s WC, and was brilliantly executed by Mr. Marcos Coll of Colombia against one of the best goal keepers in history, Mr. Lev Yashin, in one of the most brilliant comebacks game in WC history. After 5 minutes the game begun, the URSS was wining by 3 - 0 which lasted till the minute 21, when Colombia managed to score its first goal (post edited afterwards, due to a mistake in how I wrote it at first). In the second half of the game, after a few minutes, the URSS once again scored to put again a 3 goal diference, but Colombia kept on trying, and finally that match ended in a draw, 4 - 4.

FC Barcelona is the only club to have been involved in European competition in every season since 1955/56. This takes into account the first two editions of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup which took three and two seasons, respectively, to complete.
Real Madrid has missed out in Europe on only one occasion (1977/78).

Manchester United went 56 matches unbeaten at home in European competition from 1956-1996.

Real Madrid went 121 matches unbeaten at home in domestic league play from February 1956 to March 1965.

Spain is currently riding a 42 match unbeaten run in World Cup Qualifying play. Their last defeat was in 1993 (0-1 in Denmark) during the USA '94 qualifying campaign.
The former record was held by Germany which went 36 matches unbeaten from 1936-1985.
