This Winter will reveal how strong Europe's resolve is in terms of continuing to support Ukraine, since it'll be the first time that much of the middle-class will also feel the sting of the energy crisis.
Even if the winter is bad, what politician is going to be willing to come out and say their country should start doing business with Russia again?
They won't state it like that. They'll say they are in favor of bringing an equitable peace to the Black Sea region.
I’m not so sure….Blowing the damn would require the Russians to not only admit defeat and their inevitable exit of the four newly “annexed” oblasts….it would make their retreat from Crimea inevitable. Crimea without water is a resource drain on Russia. Crimea with water is at least sustainable. I just don’t see Russia admitting the inevitable with sufficient time to actually blow the dam.
1577744545856512005 is not a valid tweet id I would make a comment about the fact I find it interesting that a group of Ukrainian foot soldiers can take Russians driving up in a ********ing tank into custody without killing them yet our cops here seems to struggle doing the same thing on a regular basis….but I won’t as I don’t want to sidetrack this thread.
Blowing up the dam would also flood a lot of communities, including most of the very low lying Kherson. It would be a major civilian catastrophe, and would be correctly seen as wanton destruction for the sake of spite instead of military need.
I was replying to a post about the purchase of gas by former easterm bloc countries... https://www.politico.eu/article/hungary-signs-deal-with-gazprom-over-additional-gas/ Like I say, 'issues'. But that's about as far as it goes. The idea Russia can rely on major European powers to bail them out in terms of gas purchases is nonsense. As @The Jitty Slitter says, they've effectively buggered up their long-term prospects for energy sales because they've proved they can't be trusted.
Anyway this ship has sailed because there is no off ramp, unless Putin magically decides to fix the pipelines and turn the gas back on
When has this stopped Russia before. They've already fired rockets at a dam on the Inhulets in the hopes of taking out the Ukrainian pontoon bridges, so I'm not sure why they'd care about flooding Kherson.
That's a possibility. The problem is nobody will trust anything the russians say and the populations in major western european nations won't feel comfortable going back to relying on them for the foreseeable future.
I do find it very sad that there is almost never any "fighting age" men in the various liberation reaction videos I see. While I hope that is because the men were able to get away and are now fighting for Ukraine, I somehow doubt that is the case.
Funny you should say that. I saw a video today (it was very poorly lighted, so really couldn't see much), where the Russians allegedly dug a hole in the ground to use as a latrine right next to a functioning toilet.
A video of Ukrainian troops making their advance in the Kherson region. Breaking through the line pic.twitter.com/oIBtlXz6QK— Illia Ponomarenko 🇺🇦 (@IAPonomarenko) October 5, 2022 I know diddly about military offenses, but I do find it interesting that the HMMVs are basically driving as fast as they can across an open field, unloading their infantry, then immediately taking off again.. I'm assuming the reason they are doing that is so they can go back and get more infantry?
Well, this should get interesting.. A pro-Wagner milblogger got arrested today in Moscow. While the milblogger has supported the overall invasion of Ukraine, he (and Wagner as a whole) have been very critical on how the Russian military has performed in the War. Could we be looking at a power struggle in Russia between two heavily armed groups? It definitely seems that there is a power struggle going hot within the Russian govt/elite right now, centered on Sergei Shoigu, the minister of defence, and Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of Wagner Group. https://t.co/cM2lW4ynH6— OSINTtechnical (@Osinttechnical) October 5, 2022
Yeah, that line always puzzled me. Russia always seemed to be making it up as they went along. For, like, a thousand years.
Um...Not aware of a fascination with Russia from Americans...at least not in California or West Coast.
