Spanish Primera Liga club Almeria said on Monday they had appointed former Mexico coach Hugo Sanchez to replace Gonzalo Arconada, who was sacked on Sunday after the side's 1-0 defeat away to Sporting Gijon.

Sanchez, 50, takes over with Almeria in 16th in the standings with only one win from their last 11 matches, leaving them three points above the relegation places.

Widely regarded as the finest player Mexico has produced, the former Real Madrid striker became coach of the national side after the 2006 World Cup but was sacked at the end of March.

Almeria said in a statement on their website Sanchez had signed a contract through to the end of this season with an option to extend by one more term if the club avoids relegation.

He is due to arrive this weekend and will take charge of his first training session on Monday, the statement said.

Hugo Sanchez fired 363 days after being hired as Almeria coach. Almerias run of late sealed his fate, one point out of a possible 15 in the last 5 games and falling from 11th to the 17th place slot only one point out of relegation zone.

I guess he'll be heading back to Mexico.

Juan Manuel Lillo named new Almeria coach for the remainder of the season, he previously coached Salamanca, el Oviedo, el Tenerife, el Zaragoza o la Real Sociedad.

Lillo canned as Almeria coach this morning after losing 0-8 against Barca yesterday which saw them sink further in the cellar, 18th place with 9 points. Rumors link the following coaches as possible substitutes:

Marcelino is the front runner, Oltra and Gorosito are next in line if Marcelino turns it down. With Lillo's firing that makes four coaches so far this year in Primera: Alvarez (Sevilla), Juesualdo Ferreira (Malaga) and Gay (Zaragoza).
