A quasi preview for next year: www.dailynexus.com/article.php?a=14253 I'm glad that Avila will be pushed out to the wing. I think he's better there given his size, speed, and ability to take guys one-on-one. So, it looks like a typical starting line-up will look something like this: --------------------------Rueckner (Fr)------------------------ ----J Curry (So)-----------Iro (Sr)----------G Curry (Sr)---- --------------------------Motagalvan (Jr)--------------------- Pontius (Jr)--------------------------------------Tennelle (Sr) ---------------------------O'Brien (So)------------------------ Avila (Jr)-------------------------------------------Jenkins(Fr) ---------------------------Perera (Jr)-------------------------- Guys like Boxall (CB), Kaveny (CB), Walker (LM), Otii (F), Proctor (F), Nunez (F), Kierstead (F), and a handful of redshirts will be competing for a starting spot or significant minutes. It also sounds like we're going to rest Iro whenever the opportunity arises to save him for later in the year, so Boxall and Kaveny will likely see some chances to play CB and could see minutes on the wings or in front of Iro.
The Bakersfield Brigade of the PDL earned a US Open berth. The Curry brothers, Andrew Proctor, and Tino Nunez play for the Brigade. http://www.uslsoccer.com/teams/2007/roster/2466031.html
Walker will factor into the first XI more often than not. We'll have a fairly deep squad again which will allow for flexibility.

A recent article in the local paper (subscription required) spoke of the team's June 18 trip to the White House and their 10 day summer tour to Argentina! The Gauchos go to Argentina... classic! Go Gauchos!!!
National Champs with the President UCSB meeting the President: www.whitehouse.gov/news/r...-515h.html
Re: National Champs with the President Did the rapist get to go? Bet that was a helluva security clearance to get.
Re: National Champs with the President Was the guy convicted? No. So why are you calling him a rapist? One of these days you may find yourself in hotwater and when that day comes you may regret comments like the one above. Karma can be a bitch...
Re: National Champs with the President It's Sandon... he is cavalier when labeling individuals with racist and rapist tags. Unfortunately, both terms represent the scarlet letter of today's society and more care should be used to use the terms until there is definitive proof.
don't call him a rapist. you have no idea about the facts of the case or anything else. isla vista is a strange place where all sorts of things happen and get misinterrpreted....and i have trouble believing the girls story.
I attended UCSB and lived in Isal Vista- strange things do happen when you combine young adults, loads of alcohol and close proximity. That said, things don't look good for the ex-Gaucho: http://www.ksby.com/Global/story.asp?S=6771931
Incoming transfer, Ciaran O'Brien, was named to the All PDL team. http://pdl.uslsoccer.com/home/195961.html Also, Andy Iro will be competing for Great Britain in this month's University Games in Bangkok.
We lose 5 players: * Our GK * A defender who was injured after the first playoff match * 3 midfielders: Rosenlund turned pro early, Byrne plays for the Revs, and Frimpong (among the first off the bench) Our forwards were inconsistent last year and did not score many goals, but we're stacked with juniors and seniors along with a very good midfield winger in Avila and central mid playmaker in Ciaran O'Brien. Nick Perera (junior) was last years College Cup Best Offensive player. If he plays as well as he did versus UCLA, we're in great shape, but if he plays like he did versus Wake, Vom Steeg is going to be shuffling his line-up up front a lot. At 6'3", Perera should provide some nice mismatches and may play as the lone striker with a spread out midfield with wingers. If he falters, we can throw in Andrew Proctor (Sr), Nunez (Sr), Chinakwe (Sr), Otii (So), and few frosh and sophs that might emerge. Overall, the team is going to have a lot of big bodies and reminds me our bruising 2004 team. http://ucsbgauchos.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/mtt/ucsb-m-soccer-mtt.html
Official season preview: http://ucsbgauchos.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/spec-rel/082207aab.html And the Gaucho message board is in full swing. Our board dwarfs this thread in terms of raw info and opinions of UCSB soccer. http://p220.ezboard.com/fucsbgauchosfrm2 Go Gauchos!!!
Gauchos beat Westmont 2-0 in an exhibition at Harder. New Kiwi defender Boxall scored the first goal in a goal mouth scramble. Senior attacker Andrew Proctor scored the 2nd with a nice strike from just outside the box. Westmont looked better than last year and played a good defensive match. Ciaran O'Brian looks lethal on free kicks. We're weak again up top this year with Jenkins going back to NZ and Otii redshirting. Over 1600 showed up for the exhibition which featured a ring ceremnony.
Gaucho's at the half are tied with Stanford. A couple yellows of course given out and a bs PK called was blocked by our GK Ruekner. A few subs trying to find the right mix. Strikers called offsides a few times.
Gauchos score!!!! 1-0 partway through the second half. O'brien with the goal from the endline on a curving shot. Now both our new players have goals on the season (Boxall and O'brien).
