Bear in mind that Bocanegra is rumored to be leaving for Europe in January. If he's getting PT there, he won't be at the Olympics. The flipside of that coin is that Eddie Pope has re-signed with MLS. That means he'll be available for an over-age spot.

On the subject of Europe, it will be very interesting to see how Whitbread's situation evolves at Liverpool. The most likely scenario is that he'll go out on loan at some point. If he does, that could make it difficult to keep him in the Olympic team. Otherwise, he's a very serious prospect.

There is a reason Brad Davis got traded despite looking like a great young prospect. He doesn't play a lick of defense, and as wide midfielder that just isn't acceptable at any level beyond MLS (including the Olympics), he is a fine role player, but I don't think his offensive contribution is worth the sacrafice of defense that comes with it. Especially when you can throw someone like Ricardo Clark or even Landon Donovan there.

Why not? Olympics are offseason, correct?
