Wow, Google's import from Excel to Docs worked incredibly well! So, for your viewing pleasure, I've uploaded and made viewable my U20 callup tracker, which catalogs every U20 callup I have been able to find all the way back to the 1981 cycle (there are two previous cycles for which I have no information). It's here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lfMvt087D65kHEJtitNuODh4dPgpKCQTi6Ae9VJ2c0g/edit?usp=sharing What I track on each tab: Name Birth year GK (this is the only position I broke out) WCExc (this is where I note World Cup-rostered players who received zero U20 callups -- though, as it has been noted, some of the older data is a bit hinky because, for a while, the U20 cycle wasn't based on calendar year births) WC (made a World Cup roster) WCQ (played in a qualifier) Cap (duh) Pro (went pro) ProDC (was a pro during the U20 cycle) PrevC (was called in to a previous U20 cycle) Up (playing "up") Then I track all known callup opportunities (the naming convention is to abbreviate the location and the month, so DalMar is Dallas/March) keeping players on the list if they were called up but didn't make it and/or were replaced for whatever reason. I total everything that can be ... totaled, including how many callups each player got and how many guys are called in each cycle. Some people have suggested other trackable categories. I'm not going to add any more myself most likely, but if you have a good idea and are serious about it I'd consider either adding your work or giving you access to the file. (It was a lot of work, so breaking it would be bad. Put simply, breaking = bad.) I don't pretend that this is 100% complete or correct, and would appreciate corrections and fixes. (One reason for this is I just don't check it all that much.) Sources include U.S. Soccer, FIFA, CONCACAF and various press reports, including Soccer America, plus the research of some BigSoccer posters. If you plan to use it in some public way, some kind of polite credit, whether to me or the collective intelligence of this community, seems appropriate. Questions, comments, etc, let me know.
Have you ever kissed a girl? Who has an excel spreadsheet of US Soccer Tracking U20 call ups since 1981? I know one person who does. Seriously thanks for the info. I once bragged to a date that I tracked the number of years the US World Cup roster had played college soccer. Suffice it to say I am single.
The shared obsession and meaningful social interaction can coexist if one chooses. It takes discipline and want to, but the social can be accommodated. Thanks Dave
@SUDano's question is a reasonable one. And I'm happy to say I'm to marry a lovely young lady in August.
Of the 106 guys called up during the 2011 (91/92) cycle, I have the following as possible non-pros, as in they never signed a contract at any outdoor professional level. Anyone know more about these guys? Altamirano Jose Chavez Victor Foxhoven Zack Gonzalez Jesus Gonzalez Ruben Hines-Ike Ian Mendrano Williams Ronald Murphy Colin Palodichuk Nick Saavedra Gerardo Sarle Dominick Schoenle Eric
Ah. I saw Ruben and jumped at the name. Must be because I'm so hungry right now... (Yes, I know, it's a "Reuben" sandwich!)
Man..........Nick Palodichuk. I thought he had some potential. Multiple ankle surgeries, right? If my memory serves me correctly he had ankle surgery during both his freshman and sophomore years at Duke. Played a little in the PDL, but without impact. https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicholas-palodichuk-04257988
Agreed. Watched him play at Duke on the same team as Wenger (but younger) and thought he was at least as good. And Wenger was dominant at the time.
BTW, is Jesus Gonzalez the same guy with a DOB of Feb 26, 1992? If so, he's been bouncing around the lower divisions of Mexico, sometimes referred to as Alexandre Gonzalez. http://ligamx.net/cancha/jugador/62384
I think that's him based on this roster and YA thread: http://www.ussoccer.com/stories/201...-rongen-names-20-players-to-dallas-cup-roster http://forums.bigsoccer.com/threads/alexandre-gonzalez-at-necaxa.1944742/ http://www.sjearthquakes.com/post/2013/04/04/signing-bay-area-native-gonzalez-inks-deal
Of the guys who remain, the only other one I think signed a pro contract is Colin Murphyw, ho appears to have played at Boston College and for New Zealand before joining the NASL Strikers, so I'll add him to the pro list. Any updates, let me know. Altamirano Jose Chavez Victor Foxhoven Zack Gonzalez Ruben Hines-Ike Ian Mendrano Williams Ronald Palodichuk Nick Saavedra Gerardo Sarle Dominick Schoenle Eric
Here's a messy list of possible non-pros from the 2009 (89/90) cycle. Some of these guys were playing up and showed up again the next time around, unless of course my records are messed up: Altamirano Jose Amick Stuart Blaise Franklin Brown Cameron Cortez Victor Duble Sean Giallombardo Andrew Gonzales Christian Gross Warren Hernandez Josh Kalis Ian Kelly Danny Lara Wilfrido Lara Frank Markheim Derek Martucci Michele Mittoo Andre Rodney Akheel Saavedra Gerardo Shupp James Sigler Pat Sinclair Hasani Taylor Chris Torres Guillermo Torres Jose Uy Matthew Wenzel Daniel Wiet Matt Torres, above, is not the MNT's Memo, who is an '87 and didn't play U20 ball.
Matt Wiet ended up signing for the Crew and playing on loan for the Dayton Dutch Lions when they were in USL Pro. Guillermo Torres made a few appearances in the Segunda Division in Mexico. http://www.ligamx.net/cancha/jugador/78919
Cameron Brown, who was a well-regarded prospect who had some serious injury issues, appears to have played pro indoor (which I'm not counting for this purpose).
The 95/96 group has an interesting post-U20 history so far. You've got two guys with WCQ appearances already; one who didn't make the Finals squad who is now collecting EPL starts, and of course the Big Asterisk, a guy not in the pool who has already scored in a World Cup... and I haven't even mentioned several of the highest-profile guys in the group, to say nothing of the '97s who bulled their way in.
Here are the 2007 cycle players (87/88) I haven't yet found pro careers for. Banghart Kris Banks Trevor Brown Cameron Bumpas Brandyn Cardenas Nick Dworsky Bill Folk Greg Hidalgo Rodrigo Kelly Danny Koss William Lopez Daniel Rein Marcus Sandbo Steven Skverer Nicholas Tutich Matthew Van den Beld Mitchell
And 2005 (85/86): Chevannes Adrian Hall Will Kartunen Andrew Long Kevin Owens Brandon Rogers Robby Rueckner Bryant Sandbo Steven Schilling Karl Soroka Ryan Yeagle Darren
