I'm still waiting on the orange cone that is going to replace myrie's production, when will we sign him!? But seriously, I know it was one game, but I get the feeling that Hackworth was pimping this kid, saying he saw something (obviously, maybe the kid shined with his size against u-17s, and then fizzled when everyone else grew) and that's why he was held onto for so long. There's a reason he saw 0 minutes for Chicago (is that correct? did he not even play in the open cup?).

At least with Szetela, Nowak has seen/coached him first-hand instead of having to go off of Hackworth's assessment.

Also, in regards to us being thin at defense now, we were thin before, so much so that we decided to play a kid who could not play as our starting Right Back.

The only question, then, is why have we not yet signed him up?

The Szetela news is interesting, but puzzling. Would he essentially be competing for a roster spot with a veteran USL defender? See who impresses the most? What's more of a glaring need as of right now: defender or defensive mid? Certainly Cristian Arrieta would come a bit cheaper.

Re: Trade and Accquisition Rumors - Links and Highlights

Why would they be in competition -- they play different positions and we need depth. Union only has 20 roster spots filled now, so even if they sign Noone and Abu Bakr they have 2 open spots (MLS roster limit is 24). I wouldn't be surprised if Arrieta is signed instead of Abu Bakr, but they could still fit in Szetela and/or Noone if they wanted. And they are also looking for a forward apparently (given the rumor about Emilio).

I'd like to see some signings soon. Given the youth on our roster and inexperience, we could use the depth.

Myrie blows - there is a reason he did not play at all last year! I love the move! They tanked his ass off the website quick! I like Nowak even more! He was pi$$ing me off last week!

    http://www.socceramerica.com/article/37456/philly-files-discovery-claim-on-arrieta.html

The Union is one of two MLS teams to file a discovery claim on Arrieta, according to agent Rob Colosia. The Crew is the other.

Unless the discovery process changed in the new CBA (which would make sense but I do not recall anything about it) - if the Crew filed its claim first, then Philly would have to compensate the Crew to get Arrieta's rights. Given Myrie's release, it does sound as if Arrieta will be Philly-bound.

On the Myrie front, I would have given he or Stahl the lowest player rating in the Seattle game (Stahl made a few decent defensive stops but took foolish cards to get booted out of the game). He never played for Chicago mainly because he was signed very late in the season (mid-September). He was the biggest head-scratcher in terms of expansion picks and understanding the logic for the pick.

Re: Trade and Accquisition Rumors - Links and Highlights

So then what's the skinny on roster compliance, and the deadline of 5 PM on Wednesday of last week, if there are still players unsigned and/or on-trial with the team? Teams had to trim their rosters to 24 players or less (20 senior, 4 developmental) and come within their budget/salary cap, so why doesn't it work the other way around?

Re: Trade and Accquisition Rumors - Links and Highlights

Players can keep trialing in and out with the team all season until the roster freeze in September - teams just have to now always have 24 or less players on the active senior and developmental roster and all of its rostered players (i.e. active roster, injured reserve, players on season-long loans to other teams) salaries must be under that $2.5M cap amount.

Not necessarily Philly related, but it might be:

Noonan signs for Seattle; Parke in limbo

"However, the team has yet to make a decision on former New York Red Bulls defender Jeff Parke. The defender has been in camp with Seattle for most of the preseason and accompanied the club on its preseason trip to Spain. "

Maybe Seattle wants to trade Philly-native Parke to the Union?

According to the links I posted, the roster freeze happens in 2 weeks (April 15th).

I knew I should have qualified my post 'cause I'd get a response like this :p

I was not inferring that they'd be in competition for one position! Obviously they play different positions. Where I was wrong, however, is not realizing we have more than one roster spot still open.

Wait, that's not a roster freeze, is it? That's when the trade window closes. Out of contract guys could still be added to the roster after that date.

Not according to the Delco Times article:

But MLS plays Calvinball anyway, and changes the rules as the game progresses.

Re: Trade and Accquisition Rumors - Links and Highlights

April 15 is certainly when the international transfer window closes for MLS.

However, it may also be roster compliance day for MLS (Whcih typically happens in the pre-season, but was pushed back due to the CBA negotiations) which is when teams are required to have only 24 players on the roster. That might be what is meant from "roster freeze". Though, I thought compliance day already passed.

No matter what, though, a team is neer stuck with only a set 24 players. Players can be added or dropped during the season, though the team might be responsible for the full salary of a dropped player depending on their contract. And, of course, transfers in from other leagues can't occur unless it is during the mid-season transfer window.

Re: Trade and Accquisition Rumors - Links and Highlights

I guess I'm confused at the term "roster freeze."

Zman Gunner wrote that the roster freeze occurs in September and Dills posted that it happens on April 15th. I couldn't see how they could be writing about the same thing. That's why I asked if Dills was referring to the transfer window which is the only thing other than the tax deadline I know about happening on that day.

Oh well, in the end it doesn't really matter if I understand these rules, only that the Union front office does.

Maybe the Delco Times reporter wasn't 100% sure on the facts either.

Thierry Henry to Union After World Cup

Whispers around the River End...Barcelona and the Union are in the final stages of talks to bring Thierry Henry to the Union on loan following the World Cup. It's said that the MLS are working with the Union and with Barca to have Henry in blue and gold for a month. You heard it here first.

Quite possible. Many of the reporters covering MLS teams don't understand the nuances of roster and player acquisition rules. The reporter may have just been referring to the transfer window closing, but did not know a good way to phrase it.
