Oh, so, if I've got the Icelandic naming conventions right, the child has the same name as his grand-father...
Well, correct me if I am wrong: Brynjarsdottir in Icelandic should mean "Brynjar's daughter", so I assume Brynjar is the name of Dagny's father. This should mean that she gave her newborn child the same name of her father (his grand-father). And I am afraid all Icelandic family names are patronymics, not matronymics: so I don't think the baby's name is Brynjar Dagnysson, but Brynjar (insert the name of Dagny's husband/partner, that I am not aware of)sson.
It was a little joke. But they aren’t married yet, so without knowing the legalities of Icelandic law, i don’t know what the name should be. Her partner is Omar Pâll , so the other “traditional” naming convention we expect might be Brynjar Omarsson Looking at the Iceland Men’s National team, every player is somebody’s son except a goalkeeper named Schram. He was born in Denmark. I know a couple of folks from Iceland that don’t follow that system at all. Maybe they have “Americanized” their names.
In any event, Brynjar is Brynjarsdottir's son. Sounds like Aeschylus has been doing some new writing.
One of the Icelandic player’s middle names is Flôki, who if you have read the sagas or watched the Vikings TV show, is Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson who is credited with discovering, or at least naming Iceland. Kinda cool. hrafna means raven, two of which were magical companions of Odin. It could also refer to a dark haired person, which in ancient times was associated with thievery in the sagas.
I'm interested in how this kid Olivia Moultrie is doing with the Thorns? Wow, 13 years old and playing with the Thorns first team in the pre-season tourney. That to me is amazing. cpthomas, were you able to watch her play on Wed 3/27? If you can, please let us know a little about her abilities on the field among much older and more experienced teammates and competition.
I blew it and didn't notice she went in. I didn't notice anyone completely out of her level, so that's pretty impressive. Jon Lipsitz noticed her go in and said she played above 13 but below U23.
i think she plays the #10 behind the forwards for this concacaf girls' u15 championship game against mexico last year. some good passes - considering she was 12 turning 13 at the time. still don't know if she's just hype.
I doubt she's just hype, although whether she will pan out over time is unknown. I don't think the Thorns would be doing what they're doing with her if they didn't think she is for real. That isn't the nature of the Thorns organization. I suspect they think she's a potential mega star and are doing whatever they can to have her in their system.
Portland Thorns become the first NWSL CLub to partner with a CBD company: https://maryjaneexperience.com/first-ever-partnership-between-cbd-brand-and-womens-pro-soccer-team/
Jonathan Tannenwald @thegoalkeeper 1h A source tells The Inquirer the Thorns will host the NWSL Challenge Cup final - unless - the state of Oregon’s current ban on Multnomah County (where Portland is) having fans in the stands due to the pandemic leads the league to move the game.
That sounds right to me. It will be interesting to see what the Governor decides, as she has not been very sports friendly.
The league commish has made an appeal to the Gov. among other things, Paulson pointed out that the Thorns could move the game about 6 miles West to a stadium in Washington County ( Hillsboro Stadium) and comply. https://katu.com/news/local/nwsl-commissioner-appeals-to-oregon-governor-for-thorns-game-exemption
The Governors office has turned down Lisa Baird’s appeal on an attendance ban. The Timber’s And thorns are making their own appeal. https://www.oregonlive.com/timbers/...o-allow-fans-into-marquee-soccer-matches.html
Just announced that the risk level has been lowered and the Thorns will be able to have some fans for the game this weekend -- most likely 15% of capacity, which would be just under 3,400 fans.
Great news, but most curious. . As I was driving home OPB said the governor was shutting down businesses and gatherings statewide. I guess we’ll see tomorrow when tickets should be available in our accounts
So I hear Mark Parsons is favored to become the Dutch National coach after the Olympics. Congrats(I guess)
full replay of the Throns/Red Stars match.
