There's plenty of law enforcement who are Latino/Chicano/ etc. I wonder what catch-22 is going on in their mentals right now? But you know what, if you are a lawyer or aspiring lawyer, Arizona is a gold mine!

By the way, I haven't read the law, but California tried this whole "vhere ees your paperz" thing a few years back with Prop. 187--which was passed by the electorate in a landslide of ugliness.

Then of course the law was laughed out of court in a heartbeat.

Is Arizona going to deploy police officers dedicated just to catching illegals? Or are they just going to arrest people that they, for example, pull over for speeding and don't have an ID.

So her bill isn't finished yet? It still has to get approved from the Arizona supreme court?

If you're pulled over for speeding though, you've been pulled over for speeding. What I have yet to see is what this law does in addition to anything that's already out there. How does a law enforcement officer decide to stop someone for being illegal in any way that's different from any current way they could stop an individual for reasonable suspicion?

What tool does this bill actually provide LE with that supporters keep saying it has?

They're trying to beat out Virginia for being the most intolerant backwoods ****s in America. They threw in a "Birther Bill" to boot.

I wonder if it will tie in similiar to the reasonable doubt laws. Like when they pull over someone for a routine traffic stop, they have a reasonable doubt that they could have an illegal immigrant on their hand. Again though, what does an illegal immigrant LOOK like? It's easier to suspect a drug smuggler or addict based on patterns of behavior (smell of weed, erratic behavior, etc.). But an illegal alien? Like I say, if you are a lawyer looking for work, Arizona is waiting for you.

In a very quick check, it seems as though the LEGAL population of people of latino or hispanic descent is nearly 2 million in Arizona.

How on earth do you NOT violate their civil rights if you are routinely stopping them and asking them to prove their citizenship or legal alien status?

I actually agree with the narrow snippet of McCain's rant that the feds have failed to secure the borders. I would be all for amnesty if we had a way of securing the borders now. Without that, its a continuing problem.

But this law is insane in its sweep of legal citizens AND its likelihood to miss illegal aliens that are not hispanic. There are plenty of European illegals in this country as well. Just go to Boston for Exhibit A where Irish and Haitian illegals each trump mexican and central american illegals. My guess is that Arizona may have a few illegals of non-hispanic descent as well. So, the law will likely not reach them, but will effect thousands of legal, American citizens. Nice.

In a way, you're right--from what I've read, crime has actually been going DOWN in Arizona, and the illegal immigrants have been committing crimes at an even lower rate than the "legal" population to boot.

So, this is a solution in search of a problem.

Of course it makes sense that the people who are undocumented will commit less crimes. When you're illegal, chances are you'll go out of your way to avoid any trouble.

Hey, maybe we should make everybody illegal. Then crime would really go down.

Are the business owners who employ illegals going to get thrown in jail every time they do it?

If not, you can add "hypocritical" to the long list of adjectives describing this bill.
