So vipnerd, seeing you picked the big Euro and SA entries left, where do you see the greatest possibility of an upset?
I see the toughest challenge coming for Spain in Quarters ... Paraguay are a tough opponent. Haven't seen much of Australia except in the summaries, but judging by what I saw Ireland against Mexico they seem as a compact team that fights every inch of the field. I belive in the US team. Unfortunately they will confront the favorite of the tournament, Argentina. Does the US have the power upfront to match the Argentinians? Yes. But it is downtown where probably the US will encounter the problems. Argentina gets to the goal with 5 and 6 players, have mobility, ability and power. I think the faith of the US team will follow the same path as in the U17 WC, where they will lose the the better team in the tournament. Had they avoided Argentina or Spain (like Korea did) they would have reached the semis. Brasil should reach semis topping Japan. It has less to do with the history of the 4 semifinalists I chose, it has to do with the experience that the players from Argentina, Brasil and Spain posses. Ireland should be happy with their schedule. How do you see this progressing?
Well what you write makes sense to me. The thoughts that i would add: - Three African teams in the 2nd round in a tournament that African teams have had success in the past. To me the odds are that one African team will make the semis at least but which one I haven't the faintest. And in that statement i'm not even ommiting the Ivory Coast which would have to beat both USA and Argentina (probably) to do it. Could be BK toastiung Spain in the quarters. Stranger things happen... - I think Spain will dispose of Paraguay. - I'm not so high on Brazil as you. (Now watch them win the whole thing. ) - I also haven't seen Australia so that part of the draw is hard to comment on for me. - Still Argentina seem like faves to me. It will be fun to watch the games. Unfortunately I'll be away from my computer till Friday. Get back to you then.
After Monday's Games ... Tougher than expected, still Japan, Argentina and the US went thru. Canada was a glad surprise.
