What is the latest on the meeting that supposedly took place between Mohammed Atta and the Iraqi agent in Prague? Have US officials ever confirmed that it took place? How strong is the evidence? Why isn't it (often) cited as evidence of Iraq supporting terrorism when the argument for a US strike is made?
If you read between the lines, this isn't used as evidence because the reliability of the initial report is questionable at best. We received this report from Czech intelligence about 9 months ago I believe, and have been unable to substantiate it. The closest the Pentagon has come to endorsing it has been to reluctantly admit that the meeting was possible in theory. This excuses the known fact that Atta was in Florida 2 days prior to the alleged meeting and nobody has been able to produce any evidence that he made a trip out of the country and back.
...and even if the meeting is verified, it still probably had nothing to do with the attacks of 9/11.
I'd have to find the stories, but my understanding was that much later (and much quieter) the entire story was disproven. Atta was likely never even in Prague. But the story of the meeting was much juicier than the story of no meeting, so the news outlets buried the correction.
This week's Time magazine has a big spread on the Iraq situation, including a pretty substantial article on the alleged Prague meeting.
