And you can also argue vice versa (reverse the situations of attacker/defender). Somewhere above I said words to the effect that "whether of not there is an advantage" depends on the circumstances. But to take this into account, you have to introduce another layer of subjectivity - "was an advantage gained"? For me, decide where the line should be (level with last defender, 1ft beyond, I don't care too much) then apply it consistently even if by a toe nail. No reason why this cannot be fully automated which then removes human error/subjectivity and speeds up the game.
Oliver didn't call this pen and he's looking right at it close up. VAR had to call him to have a second look. Incredible!
Oliver cost us 2 huge points. Wonder if beating man city would have given us the bump we needed to keep on powering?
The extra pts from that game and the Spurs games would have given us a bit of a cushion for when our slump hit .
Think we've seen the wheels have fallen off for a reason -- there's exhaustion, both mental and physical, all over the pitch IMO. And injuries are what they are as well. But a handful of extra points (let's just say Doku kick, Odegaard handball, Spurs bullshit VAR error) sure would help the overall mood & campaign. Really painful are the missed points from missed chances... the goals NOT scored, some of them downright expected IMO, have been worth a lot more in the aggregate than the ref mistakes have been. LFC created what they needed to in order to stay well in this prem fight, and probably make the FA cup final. They didn't finish those chances.
Protecting/explaining/excusing the ref. Once again. This has happened way too often this season. I don’t have a solution other than to say this system is not working.
One "error" (really meaning interpretation which should have been given) out of the three that Forest pathetically had a fit over. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/40050922/premier-league-panel-var-error-forest-everton
I just wonder had the ref called all three as penalties would the panel findings be the same? I tend to think not.
I'll advocate for more scoring. Defenders getting bailed out because of a toenail is plainly ridiculous. And this is coming from a defender.
Yep, and offsides given coz some random part of the attacker's anatomy is closer to the goal can be total bullshit too - eg his shoulder being an inch ahead of the defender, when he's 30 yards away from the effing goal gives zero - zero - advantage.
JUST INHoward Webb says Premier League referees are set to announce to stadium crowds why they have changed their decisions after a VAR intervention, from next season. The IFAB remains steadfastly opposed to broadcasting the real-time conversations.https://t.co/n5MR6KF9Xg— Dale Johnson (@DaleJohnsonESPN) April 30, 2024
Like that is going to help...it'll certainly add time to the game, and make the ref even more central to attention from the crowd...
If people could be swayed by reason, I'd think them giving reasoning might be valuable? PGMOL are probably operating under that same misapprehension. But as well all know, we're way beyond "reason" for this stuff.
Tied himself into a pretzel just to avoid saying it was an error. Mess? OK. Error? No no no no no. Joke.
The reality of the laws is that there is leeway here for the ref to make this decision. Same thing that happened in CL Arse-Bayern match... this is within the remit of the head official. Don't have to like it, but leagues, UEFA, PGMOL, etc... they don't want these kinds of goals scored. That's why the refs did what they did in this instances.
probably a good thing, should probably announce at the start what VAR is looking at but it's only a matter of time until they screw that up so no sure how much use it will be. If the PGMOL doesn't want to make the audio available live why not just release it to the TV broadcasters after the game. The TV people can hear it already so it's not like they'll be able to cover up a massive F*** up, not that they should be. They could even wait until Monday so there is a chance to get all of their ducks in a row in terms of the excuses.
Ah the memories. Short story about PGMOL wanting to be fair..... pic.twitter.com/HHGv7zqCv6— Shaun (@LfcShaunjudge) May 1, 2024
