Freddie Woodman will start the season as #NUFC no.1 - and will make his Premier League debut on Sunday. Martin Dubravka & Karl Darlow both missing for Steve Bruce, who says “Freddie’s played for two years in the Championship and deserves his chance.”🧤⚽️— Keith Downie (@SkySports_Keith) August 13, 2021
He does deserve the chance but I'm not sure he'll add masses to England's options that we don't already have - he's a very good shot-stopper but his distribution looked distinctly ordinary at Swansea. I also suspect that Dubravka will take the spot back before long. Still, happy for him.
Balogun does start, has anybody seen a positive game from him? I’ve only ever seen him for our youth sides but he was always very underwhelming to say the least. What do I know though, good luck to the lad but I didn’t think he’d make it as a pro.
No slight against him personally but on that Arsenal showing Barry might as well add him and Smith Rowe to his list of youth players starting for Championship calibre clubs this weekend.
8 youth team eligible players have started in the Premier League so far during matchday 1 - Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Tino Livramento (Southampton), Luke Thomas (Leicester City), Max Aarons (Norwich City) Emile Smith-Rowe (Arsenal), Oliver Skipp (Tottenham Hotspur) Falorin Balogun (Arsenal), Mason Greenwood (Man Utd) 18 youth team eligible players have started in the weekend Championship games so far - Joe Bursik (Stoke City) Levi Colwill (Huddersfield Town), Jacob Greaves (Hull City), Zeno Ibsen Rossi (Bournemouth), Djed Spence (Middlesbrough), Joel Latibeaudiere (Swansea City) Max Bird (Derby County), Callum Styles (Barnsley), Ryan Giles (Cardiff City), Fabio Carvalho (Fulham), Ryan Longman (Hull City), Keane Lewis-Potter (Hull City), Alex Scott (Bristol City), Tyrhys Dolan (Blackburn Rovers), Femi Azeez (Reading), Ethan Bristow (Reading) Tyreece John-Jules (Blackpool), Rhian Brewster (Sheffield United) Joel Bagan also from Cardiff City but he has been capped for Scotland youth.

A bit of a slow start for the English eligible players starting for matchday 1 but not really a surprise to be honest for a couple of reasons. Firstly the England players involved in the Euro’s have by in large been rested and will probably start to trickle back within the next few weeks. Also another consideration is that the teams we lost last season were more productive than the teams promoted so this is something which could have a negative impact for this season but other teams have started off with more English players so it might end up levelling out but we will see.
20 youth team eligible players have started in the midweek Championship games - Joe Bursik (Stoke City) Levi Colwill (Huddersfield Town), Joel Latibeaudiere (Swansea City), Zeno Ibsen Rossi (Bournemouth), Jacob Greaves (Hull City), Lee Buchanan (Derby County), Djed Spence (Middlesbrough). Callum Styles (Barnsley), Scott High (Huddersfield Town), Fabio Carvalho (Fulham), Harrison Burrows (Peterborough United), Ryan Giles (Cardiff City), Femi Azeez (Reading), Ethan Bristow (Reading), Alex Scott (Bristol City), Max Bird (Derby County), Louie Sibley (Derby County), Tyrhys Dolan (Blackburn Rovers), Alex Mighten (Nottingham Forest), Keane Lewis-Potter (Hull City). Harrison Burrows looked good off the bench in the TV game at the weekend. He's now earned a starting spot and scored. Carvalho, Burrows and Azeez have now got two goals each in three Championship games. There are a core of regular starters forming and a few that are in and out options that are worthy impact bench options.
I will be seriously underwhelmed if Garner really goes to Forest on loan. At least he should go to a top Champo club if not abroad, but this is not a leap forward for him at all.
Agreed and it’s not a slant on Forrest but at 20 and already played a season there you would kind of hope he would get a more progressive move for someone that’s supposedly highly rated. On a positive, I guess it’s better than warming the bench at Utd or playing U23 football.
Cole Palmer came off the bench for city today. He got some decent minutes aswell. very highly rated local lad.
Harvey Elliot is looked very impressing for Liverpool. I can see them using him quite a bit, because he can do both jobs on the right, both in midfield and wide if Salah moves inside.
I wonder if all these right backs and attacking midfielders we're producing is indicative of a lack of football intelligence in the coaching hierarchy in England. It's seems like if you have any more advanced level of talent then you're an attacking midfielder and if you're a bit more physical with that talent then you get put in the modern full back role. Klopp has already redefined Jones's and Elliot's position to a midfield position. I'm still convinced that Jones should have been developed into a 6. It's possible that this is some statistical fluke but I suspect there's something more systemic behind it.
